DCSI Clearances

From January 2014, all our Practicum students are required to complete criminal history record assessment with the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI). You need to obtain:

● Child related employment screening

● Vulnerable person-related employment screening

As a student, when you lodge all four forms at the same time a single fee applies. You are responsible for the cost.

You must have valid clearances prior to starting a practicum.

All forms are processed on-line now. Please email and she willadd you to the DCSI on-line system.

Advanced and Professional practicumrequires students to show their initiative, organisational ability and communication skills as well as the many other specialised skills required to work in disability service agencies.

To negotiate a placement, students enrolled in either Advanced or Professional practicum should follow the process indicated below.

1. Students have the opportunity to select a placement of their preference. To assist with the placement selection students can check with Charmaine Mahar about opportunities we are aware of.

2. Students should email to discuss the suitability of their choice of placement with Charmaine Mahar, Topic Coordinator, or Peggy Essl, Practicum Coordinator.

3. Students will make the initial contact by introducing themselves to the agency and explaining that they are undertaking a Masters of Disability & Developmental Education and are seeking a placement (150/250 hour) placement.

4. If the agency accepts the request for placement, the student should ask for the name of a contact person or possible agency supervisor. Please note – Agency Supervisors need to be experienced disability professionals with an appropriate tertiary level qualification or they need to have 10 or more years in the disability sector with a Cert IV.

5.To gain confirmation of the placement, students must send the placement information (See form below) to Charmaine Mahar or Peggy Essl.

6. Charmaine Mahar or Peggy Essl will contact the agency to ensure the agency is able and willing to meet the requirements of receiving a Practicum student.
