Overview of Responsibilities

The Director is responsible for the overall management of the Huddleston Centre, including delivery of the Centre’s Strategic Plan. The Director will ensure that all work is carried out in an effective and efficient manner in accordance with the Centre’s Articles of Association, Policies, Procedures and the direction set by the Committee of Management.

Duties

More specifically, the Director is responsible for the list of activities below. The execution of these activities, and some of the management tasks relating to them, may be delegated to other Centre staff or external professionals and trades people; but not the responsibility for ensuring that the work is carried out satisfactorily.

Operational projects

-Ensuring that projects are delivered successfully, within the policies and procedures of the Centre, delivering specified outcomes;

-Ensuring that project reporting and monitoring meets the requirements of the relevant funding bodies and is completed on-time to a professional standard;

-Ensuring that the Committee of Management is kept abreast of project development and performance;

-Delivering the Centre’s Operational Plan.

Strategic planning

-Maintaining and updating an Operational Plan, in consultation with the Committee of Management;

-Monitoring and reporting on progress against the Plan;

-Devising and reviewing policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.

Financial activities

-Drafting the Centre’s Budget, in consultation with the Treasurer;

-Ensuring the Centre’s accounts are kept correct and up-to-date;

-Ensuring that expenditure is managed within the Budget and that any expected variances are communicated to the Committee of Management;

-Ensuring that the end of year accounts and audit are undertaken in a timely and precise manner;

-Ensuring that payroll is completed on correctly and on time;

-Ensuring that all financial and other returns to HMRC, Companies House, the Charity Commission and other relevant bodies are completed on time.

Human resources activities:

-Managing the recruitment of staff in line with Delegated Powers Policy;

-Ensuring that all the supervision needs of all Centre staff are provided for;

-Ensuring that all staff records, including employment contracts, timesheets, sick leave records and holiday records are maintained and kept up to date;

-Authorising expenses in line with Centre policy and procedures;

-Authorising holidays;

-Ensuring that staff appraisals take place annually;

-Conducting an annual salary review, providing recommendations to the Committee of Management;

-Ensuring that the disciplinary procedures of the Centre are adhered to;

-Coordinating and chairing regular and ad-hoc staff meetings as required.

Fund raising and promotional activities

-Applying for appropriate funding to achieve the objectives of the Centre’s Strategic Plan;

-Seeking and maintaining corporate and private donors;

-Devising and implementing fundraising events and activities;

-Ensuring all applications for funding are reviewed and quality assured prior to submission;

-Promoting the work and activities of the Centre within the local community;

-Ensuring that the Centre liaises with and adequately promotes its services with other relevant organisations and voluntary sector groups;

-Maintaining the Centre’s website, Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Premises and vehicle maintenance

-Ensuring that the Centre’s premises are well-maintained and fit for purpose;

-Ensuring that the Centre’s vehicles are maintained, have valid MOTs and insurance, and are fit for purpose.

Person Specification

Essential

-Proven strategic planning ability;

-High level written and verbal communication skills;

-High level negotiation and partnership-building skills;

-Experience of recruitment of staff/volunteers;

-A track record of successfully delivering projects;

-Ability to plan, manage, and monitor expenditure against budgets;

-A sound understanding of financial controls;

-Experience of developing and implementing fundraising strategies;

-An interest in and commitment to, the Centre’s work;

-Professional management training or qualification, or significant managerial experience across different settings;

-Degree level of equivalent;

Desirable

-Experience of the voluntary sector;

-A sound understanding of the issues facing young people with disabilities;

-Experience of managing budgets in excess of 250,000GBP;

-Willing to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the Centre;

-Experience at senior management level;

-Category D1 driving license.
