Director of Player and Coach Development – Job Description

The Director of Player Development will lead the development and implementation of a unified plan for IYHA which will provide the basis to develop hockey player and hockey coaches’ skills and the attitude required to be prepared and competitive at all levels of play.

Qualities necessary of the Director of Player and Coach Development

  • Experienced hockey individual.
  • Strong coaching background, youth hockey coaching experience preferred.
  • Commitment to the sport.
  • Must possess strong communication skills.
  • Must be able to communicate goals and objectives.
  • Must be able affirm that IYHA coaches clearly understand their responsibilities.
  • Must be able to communicate long term vision behind the goals and objectives.
  • Must be comfortable teaching coaches, players, and parents.
  • Must have patience to achieve long term goals.
  • Must have USA Hockey CEP Certification Level 3 - , Intermediate (Level 4 - , Advanced or higher, preferred) or have coaching license or certificate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Work with Player Development Committee - (PDC) to continually implement and revise IYHA Player and Coach Development Plans . Drive development of initial development plans (players and coaches).
  2. Facilitate all IYHA player skill clinics as specified by PDC.
  3. Attend, at a minimum, one practice for all teams, at least monthly during the season
  4. Work with program coordinators in development of a well trained IYHA coaching staff.
  5. Provide clear goals and objectives for player and coach development.
  6. Work with PDC and program coordinators to deliver parent education programs to the association.
  7. Communicate to players, parents and coaches USA Hockey's Player Development opportunities.
  8. Ensure that the IYHA is promoting age-specific skill development in all of their programs.
  9. Organize and develop workshop and on-ice clinics for coaches.
  10. Drive the education and implementation of a dry land training program throughout IYHA.
  11. Work in conjunction with PDC to establish method with IYHA Board for conducting coach and parent education meetings.
  12. Report directly to IYHA Board, monthly from August through November, plus January, March and June.
  13. Assist program coordinators in recruitment and selection of coaches.

Optional Duties: if recruited by either of the three program coordinators and acceptable by the Director of Player and Coach Development

  1. Be involved in the player selection process.
