Summary

As an integral part of the Pastoral Team, the Music Director develops, builds, and sustains the parish music program, for the Greater Glory of God.

Duties and Responsibilities

•develops a strong and sustainable choral and instrumental music program for a growing, multi-ethnic Jesuit Catholic parish in a beautiful, historically significant church

•forms and sustains strong choirs for parish worship, marriages and funerals, religious education, social ministry, and evangelization

•serves as an accompanist for weddings and funerals

•selects music and musicians for parish liturgies and events

•teaches the congregation new contemporary and traditional music appropriate to the liturgical calendar and the setting

•recruits and trains cantors, soloists, musicians, and adult and youth choir members

•assists in the planning and execution of liturgies and other celebrations

•furthers the Jesuit, Catholic mission of the parish

•works with others to coordinate liturgical and rehearsal schedules, and bulletin and website announcements

•professionally maintains instruments, sound systems, and other musical equipment

•prepares and manages the Music Budget

•maintains organized and up-to-date music files

•meets regularly with the Pastor, the Office Manager, and Associate Pastors for planning and evaluation

•attends staff, leadership, and Liturgy Committee Meetings

•maintains professional competency within the local music community

Preferred Qualifications

•strong social and interpersonal skills

•a bachelor’s degree or higher in music

•competent musician on keyboard and piano

•familiarity with contemporary worship music

•experienced choral director, all ages

•professional-level vocal abilities

•good oral and written communications skills

•sensitivity to the demographics of the parish and neighborhood

•demonstrable Catholic liturgical sensibilities

•understanding of and appreciation for Roman Catholic traditions of prayer and worship

•commitment to the Jesuit, Catholic tradition of social and environmental justice

•a practicing Catholic is preferred, although non-practicing Catholics or non-Catholics will be considered

Job Type

•part-time (20 hours per week, on average), with the possibility of moving to full-time as the parish grows
