Job Title:Directorof Finance & HR

Reports to:The Principal and the Finance Committee of the Governing Body

Responsible for:All aspects of the College’s finances including strategic financial planning, external financial reporting, budgeting, management accounting andoverseeing administration of day-to-day finances and payroll.All Human Resources policy and administration.

Summary

The Director of Finance & HR is a member of the College’s Senior Leadership Team and, working with academic colleagues and the Development and Estates Directors, is a key contributor to forming and implementing College strategy. The role involves keeping the Board of Governors and its Finance Committee informed about all aspects of the College’s finances and providing analysis and expertise to support decision making. The post-holder will be responsible for communicating financial and HR information, and for implementing policy in these areas, throughout the organisation. An important aspect of the role is maintaining professional relationships with external advisorssuch as auditors, investment managers and bankers, and negotiating with funders such as Dioceses and the Ministry Division of the Church of England.

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Planning: To have overall responsibility for advising the senior leadership team and the Governors, via the Finance Committee, of the College’s financial situation. To contribute to strategy discussions and to inform and advise on the financial aspects of future plans.

Finance Committee: To manage the business of the Governors’ Finance Committee and provide them with high quality financial information in order to ensure good governance and informed decision-making.

External Reporting: To be responsible for production of the annual report and financial statements and other external reporting.

Budgeting & Management Accounting: To set annual budgets and to provide the financial information needed by budget-holders, senior leadership team and Finance Committee in order to manage the College’s finances and keep colleagues informed of the financial situation.

Accounting Systems: To manage the day-to-day running of the College’s accounting systems with the assistance of two part-time Finance Assistants.

Payroll & pensions: To manage the monthly payroll processing and the administration of pension scheme payments.

Human Resources: To be responsible for setting HR policy (in conjunction with external advisers) and overseeing a framework for HR administration.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Must be in full sympathy with the Christian ethos of the College, its aims and aspirations
  • An experienced member of ICAEW/ICAS/CIPFA/CIMA/ACCA or equivalent professional accounting body
  • Proven relevant experience at a senior management level in finance
  • A strategic thinker able to contribute a financial and business perspective to the College’s Senior Leadership Team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, and specifically an ability to communicate financial information, policy and strategy at all levels of the organisation.
  • Excellent analytical skills and extensive experience of financial modelling and forecasting
  • Extensive experience of managing a budget-setting and reporting cycle
  • Strong IT skills, including advanced Excel, and an experienced user of accounting and payroll software
  • A high level of integrity, tact and discretion, particularly when dealing with confidential information
  • Well-organised and able to respond effectively and efficiently to the pressure of competing demands

Desirable

  • Current knowledge of charity legislation and accounting including the Charity SORP
  • Experience of working in a not-for-profit, charitable or educational organisation
  • Experience of implementing HR policy and knowledge of employment legislation
  • Experience of managing a team
  • Hands on experience with Sage accounting packages
  • Previous responsibility for producing the published Annual Report and Accounts for an organisation and coordinating the annual audit

Summary Terms & Conditions

Hours: The role is offered part-time at 30 hours/4 days per week (80%FTE). For the right applicant the College would consider offering between 60%FTE and 100% FTE (with commensurate adjustment to responsibilities). Salary: £44,000full time (pro-rata for 0.8FTE, £35,200)

Contract: This is a permanent role subject to satisfactory completion of a six month probation period

Holiday: The full-time equivalent holiday entitlement is 6 weeks plus 8 bank holidays. Pro-rata the holiday entitlement is therefore 30.5 days per annum (including bank holidays).Annual leave will not normally be granted during term time.

Pension: You will be entitled to membership of a Church of England Pension scheme to which the College contributes 7% of basic pay and the employee is required to contribute a minimum of 1.5%.

College Meals: You will be entitled to join students and staff for free lunches in the College dining room during term time when the kitchens are open.
