The City of Edmonton’s Waste Management Services is seeking a Director for the operation of the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, to provide leadership and management oversight within the City of Edmonton’s innovative, world-class waste management public utility, strategically aligning internal support services to the goals of the branch, department and overall goals of the organization.

This position is responsible to ensure the section operates in the most efficient and effective manner while working with a number of community stakeholders, external businesses, consultants and contractors, research partners and citizens.
As the Director, Edmonton Waste Management Centre Operations you will provide leadership and oversee the operation and management of:

  • Approximately 200 leadership, technical and front-line staff, budget and establishment of work priorities for the Edmonton Waste Management Centre
  • The Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility Operations, long haul operations, pre-processing operations and the Refuse Derived Fuel production.
  • The Edmonton Composting Facility which processes Municipal Solid Waste and biosolids into organic compost and the Materials Recovery facility operations which process all types of recyclables accepted in the City’s blue bag, blue bin and recycling depot collection programs.
  • The Construction and Demolition waste recycling operation and the Residential Transfer Station
  • Infrastructure including roadways, signs, ditches and landscaping
  • The maintenance of the various components of the Edmonton Waste Management Centre environmental systems such as pump stations and surface water management systems

In addition, you will:

  • Provide leadership, direction, guidance and supervision to the section’s diverse team and communicating the Branch’s vision, work, values and core deliverables.
  • Plan and implement continuous improvement initiatives in the management of people, developing business processes and optimizing technology
  • Support the delivery of occupational health and safety programs that include creating a safe environment for employees, contractors and citizens who frequent the site

Qualifications:

  • Recognized University Degree in Engineering, Business Administration or in a related area
  • Certified Landfill Operator under provincial legislation would be an asset
  • Progressive 10 years experience in a comparable operations area with 5 years at a senior level demonstrating analytical, problem solving and decision making skills in managing complex operational issues
  • Direct experience in the waste management industry would be an asset
  • Proven leadership and human resource management skills including performance improvement, interdisciplinary team building, decision making and individual and group supervision
  • Superior skills in establishing and maintaining effective relationships internally and externally
  • Strong interpersonal ability in dealing with the public, senior management, City Council, regulatory agencies, development industries
  • Working knowledge of the Municipal Government Act and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and Regulations
  • Advanced interpersonal communication and presentation skills

Hours of Work:36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
Salary Range:ML4, $126,940 - $158,675 (Annually)
