Researcher: LGBT Domestic Abuse

HOURS: Flexible but an expectation of 2 days (14 hours) per week.

Contract: Fixed term contract until 31st May 2019

SALARY: NJC SCP 27 - 29 - £27,579; Pro Rata £11,031.60 per annum

About Galop

Galop has been providing advice and support to the LGBT community for 35 years. Galop’s aim is to prevent and reduce violence and abuse experienced by LGBT people through the following ways;

·  Provision of practical help and support for LGBT people affected by violence and abuse

·  Empowering LGBT people to make informed choices and decisions about their lives

·  Challenging inequality and discrimination and celebrating diversity of the LGBT community

·  Working in partnership, collaboration and multi-agency action to increase the safety and well-being of LGBT people.

Galop’s Domestic Abuse Service

Galop has a range of specialist services for LGBT people who experience domestic abuse and violence including:

·  The Domestic Abuse Partnership (DAP) is a pan-London multi-agency project providing a holistic response to LGBT adults affected by domestic abuse, including advocacy, housing advice and counselling.

·  Galop provides support for LBT women through the Angelou Partnership. Angelou is a partnership of 9 specialist organisations that support women experiencing domestic across Westminster, Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea.

·  The National LGBT Domestic Abuse Helpline provides emotional and practical support for LGBT people experiencing domestic abuse.

Main Aim of the Position

This role will support the delivery of a two year project providing a coordinated national approach to understand, raise awareness and address the inequality in access to service provision for LGBT survivors of domestic abuse.

The researcher will lead on building evidence to provide key insights into the level of need and establish what Galop can learn from good practice in Women's Domestic Violence (VAWG) sector. They will:

·  Set up a user steering group, hold quarterly meetings; recruit and set up a community consultation event.

·  Study and draw findings from examples of best practice service delivery.

·  Devise, disseminate and collate results from an online survey.

·  Design and undertake qualitative interviews.

·  Produce an interim report and a final report.

·  Co-facilitate a national conference.

Main Tasks

  1. Contribute to all aspects of the design of the research element of this project, and be responsible for the planning, implementation and delivery of the data collection phase, analysis of findings and writing of the research report, maintaining Galop’s values and ethical principles of practice at all times.
  2. Monitor the progress of the research activities; meeting deadlines dictated by the funder and adjusting work-plans in response to changing circumstances, which may be out of the control of the project team.
  3. Be solely responsible for the development of a detailed data collection and analysis plan, to be agreed by the CEO and Galop’s Service Manager.
  4. Review existing literature on the experiences of LGBT people who have experienced Domestic Violence to inform the development of the research instruments to ensure the research focuses on issues raised in previous research.
  5. Lead in the design of research instruments for the qualitative work, scope of the quantitative analysis, ways to capture information on adviser interventions and templates for the development of case study examples, within Galop’s values and ethical principles of practice.
  6. Analyse guidance issued to service deliverers (statutory and otherwise) to identify what procedures are laid out and where there are gaps.
  7. Using data from Galop and Stonewall Housing’s service provision; analyse patterns of abuse, barriers to accessing support & the needs of LGBT victims/survivors.
  8. Be solely responsible for devising an access strategy for securing research participants, reviewing and revising the plan and developing contingency strategies when problems occur.
  9. Be solely responsible for identifying and securing the involvement of partner organisations across the country to assist with access to research participants and explore the possibility of using their data.
  10. Produce a research report of the data gathered over the ten months research period.
  11. Contribute to the preparation of policy and parliamentary briefings, in conjunction with Galop’s Senior Team.
  12. Meet with key officials and parliamentarians to inform them of the research findings, and ways to improve policy and practice with the aim of influencing positive change for new refugees.
  13. Work with the CEO to identify and support people who are willing to speak with journalists, prepare briefings for spokespeople and write copy for our website.
  14. Take responsibility for organisational and logistical arrangements for research interviews and meetings with external organisations.
  15. Organise meetings and/or events with a range of audiences to facilitate data collection and dissemination.
  16. Undertake other tasks as required, agreed in consultation with your line manager
