SALARY: £18,000 (+ benefits)

TERM: Fixed Term to April 2018 (with the possibility of extending the contract depending on funding)

LOCATION: YMCA Swansea Office

RESPONSIBLE TO: Youth and Community Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Leading on our Young Carers Schools’ Programme in Swansea and Neath/Port Talbot, and assisting with the delivery of our Young Carers Project.

Our YMCA Hub is based in Swansea and has a regional focus covering Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Neath & Port Talbot. We work in partnership with other like minded organisational across Wales to deliver services in North Wales and South East Wales.

YMCA Swansea supports approximately 5,000 vulnerable young people and adults per annum. Our main beneficiaries are disadvantaged young people, adults and communities due to poverty, ill health & discrimination.

JOB DESCRIPTION / PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

Position: Young Carers Youth Worker / Location: Swansea/ Neath/Port Talbot
Responsible To: Youth and Community Manager
Purpose of Job: To champion youth work in Wales. To deliver a Young Carers Awareness Schools Programme, working in partnership with schools to help identify and support young carers. To support and encourage schools to become young carers champions, and set up young carers clubs. To support the set up of a young carers family support group. To provide accessible services to young carers in Swansea, Neath/Port Talbot and the surrounding areas. To ensure that young carers views are central to all decisions made in their lives. To empower young carers to live happy and healthy lives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To support the identification of young carers, and the provision of support services that can be accessed by young carers.
2. To champion participation, by putting young people at the heart of all decisions.
3. To be professional in your roles and responsibilities.
4. To provide a youth work approach to delivery, in order for young people to develop their social skills, make friends and increase self-confidence.
5. To provide young carers with a programme of activities.
6. To support young carers, on a one-to-one and group basis.
7. To be sensitive and respectful of the needs of both young carers and their families.
8. To empower young carers to identify their own needs and to develop appropriate support systems to meet those needs.
9. To involve young carers in the decision-making and planning of facilities and activities relevant to their needs. To attend multi-agency meetings, keeping young people’s views central to all decisions made in their lives.
10. To actively listen to young carers and advocate on their behalf.
11. To develop and maintain links with other youth services across Wales.
12. To carry out such duties as may be agreed between the Line Manager and the youth worker.
13. To ensure effective standards of quality in all aspects of the work.
14. To keep records of work undertaken and attend regular reviews with line manager.
15. To maintain effective monitoring and evaluation systems and prepare reports as required.
16. The post requires a flexible pattern of work that will include evenings and some weekends.
17. The post requires a full driving licence and access to a car.
18. To carry out the responsibilities and duties of the post with full regard to all YMCA Swansea Policies and Procedures.
19. To champion the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)
20. To work in line with YMCA Swansea’s Vision.
21. You will be required to attend appropriate training as necessary, with a commitment from YMCA Swansea to Continuous Professional Development.
22. The post requires a DBS Check at Enhanced Level.

Experience/Knowledge:
Knowledge and understanding of the role of a young carer, and how it impacts on all aspects of their life / √
Significant proven track record of working with young people / √
Knowledge and understanding of Youth Work Principles / √
Knowledge and experience of Needs Assessments and Caseload Planning and Management / √
Experience of managing a youth club/community club / √
Knowledge and understanding of the UNCRC / √
Experience and understanding of informal/alternative and home school education / √
Demonstrable experience of project and activity development / √
Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding practice / √
Knowledge of up-to-date legislation in relation to working with young people and their families / √
Previous experience in one-to-one and group working with children and young people / √
Proven track record in partnership working and managing relationships / √
Understanding and knowledge of the YMCA movement in Wales / √
