Directions Spring, Week 1- Monday

PART 1:DSJ 1:

  1. Take out a piece of notebook paper.
  2. Write your Name, the Date and the Period Number in the Upper Right Hand corner.
  3. Title the top of the page: Directed Science Journal 1
  4. You will answer the journal below in a complete paragraph, using complete sentences.
  5. Your paragraph should have an introduction, 3 supporting sentences, and a conclusion.
  6. Number and highlight the period at the end of each sentence. For example, place a number 1 over

the period of your introductory sentence then highlight both the number and the period.

DSJ #1

  1. Intro: Obtain a Geology text book and turn to chapter 8. Scan chapters 8 to the end of the book.

Based on what you see, what will you be learning the first weeks of this semester?

(Body) 1. Today, you will have to draw a picture for the cover page of your science notebook.

Look at the textbook chapters indicated. Pick a picture you would like to

draw from the textbook. Which picture have you decided to draw?

2. Read the caption (the writing next to the picture). What is the picture about?

3. State one fact you learned from the picture.

  1. Conclusion: Why have you chosen this picture? (DO NOT say, “because it is easy to draw”).
  2. Pass your DSJ to the end of the tables for grading

PART 2: SCIENCE ART

  1. Take out the Science Packet you were given
  2. Refer to the first page titled, “Science Art.”
  3. Fill out the bottom portion of the page where it states your name and period. Do this in ink.
  4. On the top of the page, in the space marked “Content Area” write: Geology
  5. In the space marked, “Power Standard” write the following:

Geology Standard: There are processes that alter the observed structure of earth’s surface and interior.

  1. While completing the DSJ you picked a figure from the book to draw.
  2. Copy the picture you chose onto this page. Do quality work “I am not an artist” is not a valid excuse for messy work. Do NOT use a pen to draw, only pencil.
  3. USE A RULER for all straight lines!
  4. Color your picture as shown in the book. Again, do quality work – your points depend on it.
  5. Copy any caption (the writing below, next to, or above the picture) in black ink.
  6. When you have finished, raise your hand so that your work can be signed off.

HOMEWORK:

Finish the Science Art if you didn’t finish it in class.

BRING A 100 PAGE, COLLEGE RULED, COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK or (for a limited number of students) $1.00 to purchase one.

DSJ #2

Using the Spring Set-up packet, choose a Lab Job that you wish to do and write what the responsibilities are for that job. Use your own words, do not copy from the packet.

When you have finished, pass your paper to the end of the tables for grading.

PART 2: Science Notebook Set-up, Day 1

Materials: one composition book, blue or black ink pen, “Shipping Label”

Directions:

1. Clear off your desk except for the materials listed above, today you will set-up your SNB.

2. Attach the Pre-Printed Shipping Label to the Outside cover of your Science Notebook

  1. Open to the very first page of your Science Notebook (SNB). In the upper right hand corner of the page, write

number one and circle. This will be the first page of your SNB. MUST BE DONE IN BLUE OR BLACK

PEN ONLY!

4. You will continue numbering your pages in the same fashion, up to page 50. However, only number the pages

on the right hand side. DO NOT number pages on the left side of the SNB.

5. Your SNB will have two sides (pages); keep the following in mind:

All the pages on the LEFT are called OUTPUT pages and all the pages on the RIGHT are called INPUT pages.

PART 2: Science Notebook Set-up, Day 2

Materials: one composition book, blue or black ink pen, clear tape or glue, scissors

You will now attach the papers in the Science Set-Up Packet into your SNB according to the sequence below.

Using the packet, Chapter 8: Mass Wasting, Describe the triggers of mass wasting. (pages 186-190)

PART 2: Cornell Notes Chapter 8, IP 1 (RIGHT SIDE!!!)

  1. I will be calling you up, individually, to grade your notebooks.
  2. In your SNB (Science Notebook) turn to page 11.
  3. Title this page: Chapter 8: Mass Wasting, pg. 182-197 Cornell Notes IP 1
  4. Using a ruler divide the page into the columns as directed below (Also see page 7 for measurements)
  5. You need to read through pages 17-31 and take Cornell notes in the second column. We will go through a Powerpoint tomorrow and you will fill in the “Classnotes”

PART 3: HOMEWORK IP 1

Finish taking the personal notes for Chapter 8, pg. 182-197 Cornell Notes IP 1. I will be checking that you completed the notes started today in class.

PART 1:DSJ

  1. Staple all four DSJs together if necessary.
  2. Total the points for DSJ 1 through 4.
  3. Write the total points you earned over the maximum total of 20 points.
  4. Pass the DSJs to the end of the table for recording in Zangle.

PART 2: Science Notebook Check #1

  1. Write the number of points YOU received in the column labeled “Points Scored”.
  2. Add up the “Points Scored” and record that score in the same column next to SNB Check #1 (Line 20)
  3. Highlight the total.
  4. The total score will be checked and recorded in Zangle on Monday.

PART 3: Cornell Notes Chapter 8, pgs. 182-197 IP 1 (RIGHT SIDE!!!)

  1. In your SNB (Science Notebook) turn back to page 11.
  2. Today we will viewing a PowerPoint on the topics from pages 182-197.
  3. You will need to add to your Cornell Notes from yesterday, anything that you did not write down on your own. Write the additional notes under the third column, Classnotes

  1. Attach the Mass Wasting ECQs over your Cornell Notes on page 11, RIGHT SIDE.

HOMEWORK: Completed on the LEFT-SIDE of page 11.

Using your notes, THE Chapter packet and the Mass Wasting ECQs, follow the directions on page 8: Homework: Four Quadrants, choose 4 of the ECQs and complete one quadrant for each of those ECQs.
