Directions: Brainstorm with your group about what elements of these American literary time periods you could compare and contrast. Drawn lines connecting the three elements of Gothic literature that you want to compare to three elements for Realism.

Gothic / Realism
1.  American Gothic literature has an atmosphere of gloom, terror, or mystery. / 1.  Realism is plain and straightforward. It is rarely sentimental or emotional.
2.  There are supernatural or mysterious events that challenge reality / 2.  Realism is filled with facts and details drawn from everyday life and settings.
3.  Gothic lit has violent or disturbing events that cannot be hidden or rationalized despite the efforts of the narrator. / 3.  The characters are drawn from everyday life as well—not extraordinary people in fantastic circumstances.
4.  There is often a disturbed or unnatural relationship between things that are usually separate such as life and death, good and evil, dreams and reality, or rationality and madness / 4.  A genuine American dialect is used—not necessarily proper like previous periods.
5.  Settings that are isolated in time or space. Often these are old mansions or castles with hidden doors and secret passages / 5.  The individual is generally celebrated in Realism.
6.  Highly charged emotional states are portrayed by the characters, like terror, anger, agitation, madness, obsessive love, or the sense of impending doom. / 6.  Settings can be both urban and rural.
7.  Gothic literature is full of omens and other foreshadowing.
