Course Description

This course enhances and builds on skills learned in Photography I & Studio. It is designed to challenge the serious photography student who is interested in more self-directed projects and visual problem solving. Refining digital imaging skills is emphasized. Those who plan a college major in this field will be assisted in the critique and building of a portfolio for the college interview and application process.

Learning Outcomes

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to…

  • Exhibit self-management. This is a requirement.
  • Require the ability to develop their own ideas and themes over the year in consultation with the teacher.
  • Utilize and develop their own interests in their artwork, and be inspired by established designers and artists.
  • Research into established photographic artists and their work. This is essential and will be done with guidance from the teacher. Students are encouraged to explore and research how established photographers work and incorporate these methods, processes, and techniques in their own work.
  • Demonstrate understanding of visual art concepts such as the elements & principles of design, and problem solving, which is fundamental to this course.
  • Explore various career paths in photography such as Photo Journalism, Commercial and Fine Art Photography.
  • Apply professional exhibition techniques to present own work. Develop a quality

portfolio that effectively illustrates a personal voice

To successfully complete this course, students must:

  • Show up in class, on time!
  • Be willing and ready to work, every day! Class participation is a must!
  • Complete all assignments by given deadlines.
  • Pass course quizzes.
  • Cooperate with other students and staff to increase learning potential.
  • Take and Edit photos successfully using digital cameras and photo editing software.
  • Research a photographer and report on his (or her) style and impact on photography.
  • Take part in class discussions and critiques of photos presented in class.

Required Materials

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Access to a digital camera. This is essential!
    (Both Compact Digital CamerasorSLR Digital cameras are acceptable)

**Students should be able to supply some type of digital picture taking device (Preferably a digital camera with manual settings, but a cell phone that takes pictures, an iPod, etc. will be helpful). If a student does not have a picture-taking digital device, they may share with classmates for use school equipment. Please review the districts’ Responsible Use Guidelines (RUG) for digital devices. These guidelines will be in effect in this classroom at all times.

No cameras can be borrowed for students to take photos at home.

Additional Resources
  • It would be wise if students have a portable USB storage device so they will be able to download images from the computers to take home!
  • The students are restricted to one gigabyte of memory on the school server.This will be quickly used up when shooting and downloading photos at school.

Students can access my school website for due dates of assignments, quizzes, etc. by accessing the NBTHS website.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

  • Students are to handle all class equipment, (including computers, cameras, lights, etc.) with care.
  • Use of Cell phones, head phones, I-pods, etc. will not be allowed in class.
    (Either in the classroom or outside, when shooting) Cell phone cameras, however, can be used if no other access to a digital camera is possible.
  • Students are to avoid shooting photos in or near other classrooms so they will not disrupt the teaching and learning of others.
  • Students are not permitted to leave the school campus during class time to shoot photos.
  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the classroom at any time as this can ruin equipment.
  • Class studio time is expected to be spent working on assignments. Students will not be allowed to defer shooting photos, or editing photos until a later time.Students will not be allowed to use computers to access social media or any other website not instructed to go on.
  • Photos taken at home may only be counted for extra credit, and then only if a student has completed all of the other assignments for the class.

Grading Policies:

Photo assignments will be graded on their: quality, creativeness, relevance to the assignment, and ability to communicate an idea or message.

Quizzes will be multiple-choice or true false.
The photographer PowerPoint report will be presented in class.
(Most likely, these Power Points will be done in pairs.)

Coursework will be graded as follows:
