DiGi set for next level with 3G application
Lundal: Customers to benefit most
CYBERJAYA, 11 November 2005: DiGi submitted its application for a 3G spectrum today, confident a success will give the company a new powerful engine of growth.
DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Morten Lundal handed over the 1,070-page document in 4 volumes at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s headquarters in Cyberjaya.
Lundal said: “DiGi aims to use 3G to create a vibrant, exciting and enriching experience for the Malaysian mobile consumers. It will complement DiGi’s existing engines of growth built upon a passion to innovate.”
On the application, Lundal said: “It’s a natural step for DiGi because we are constantly evolving to increase benefits and reduce cost for our customers.”
He said: “We see enormous long-term growth capacity in 3G to provide basic and exciting new mobile services in the most effective and efficient manner possible, with savings passed on to the consumer. In the longer term, this will cause 3G to become a necessary platform for mobile operators due to the improved operating efficiency and cost savings that it brings.”
DiGi has been using its broadband EDGE-enabled Widest HighSpeed Mobile Coverage to support 3G-type services, including high speed multimedia and mobile Internet access. “DiGi is already providing broadband wireless solutions. With 3G we will have the opportunity to do even more. We can further enrich lifestyle, optimise business efficiency and practically adding value to everything that our customers do. But first, we need to obtain a 3G spectrum,” said Lundal.
The Malaysian mobile market is already one of the region’s most vibrant, with over 60% of the population currently carrying mobile devices. DiGi with 3G will enhance the growth and use of broadband mobile services even further.

DiGi will further enhance 3G by implementing HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) to provide even faster throughput for its services.
Lundal said: “DiGi will leverage on its own competence and experience together with a wide range of local content and service providers to create the right balance in competition and deliver world-class content.”
On DiGi’s chances of obtaining a 3G spectrum, Lundal said: “We do not wish to speculate, but we do believe in DiGi’s capacity and capability to leverage on 3G as a catalyst to stimulate new growth in a way that will positively impact the overall economic development and standing of Malaysia.
He added that DiGi has a track record of successful innovations and commitment to nationwide coverage both of voice and data services.
Lundal also praised the MCMC for its progressive approach in further developing the mobile communications sector. DiGi, he added, is committed to help bring Malaysia nearer its goal to become a global hub for multimedia and communications.
