Panelists’ Bio-sketches
Dr. Daniel Hardoff, MD: A pediatrician trained in adolescent medicine (1981-83), involved in the development of 6 community-based adolescent health centers in Israel. He served as the director of the Adolescent Medicine Division at the Bnai-Zion Medical Center in Haifa (1984-2006).
Dr. Hardoff is a co-founder of the Israel Society for Adolescent Medicine. He operates simulated-patients-based programs regarding communication with adolescents. Dr. Hardoff was a co-director of 3-year post-graduate diploma courses in adolescent medicine at the Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Joan-Carles Surís, MD, MPH, PhD: A pediatrician trained in adolescent health (1990-92). He created the first adolescent unit in Barcelona, Spain (1992-2003).In 2003 he moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, where he is currently the head of the Research Group on Adolescent Health and the head of ambulatory pediatrics at the Lausanne University Hospital.
Dr. Suris is one of the founders of the EuTEACH program and was the director of its summer school (2008-2013). He is currently the director of a summer course on adolescents with chronic conditions and responsible for the pediatrics module at the University of Lausanne’s Medical School where he teaches adolescent health.

Prof. Helena Fonseca, MD, MPH, PhD: A pediatrician specialized in adolescent medicine. She is the Head of the Adolescent Division, Pediatric Department, Hospital Santa Maria, Lisboa, Portugal (since 1996) and serves as the Head, of the Pediatric Obesity Clinic, at Hospital de Santa Maria (since 2006). Dr. Fonseca is also the coordinator of the Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Modules of the Master Program in Eating Disorders, at the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Lisbon (since 2009).
Dr. Fonseca is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon since 2010, and served as the Coordinator of the Master Program in Adolescent Health, at the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Lisbon (2010-2015).Dr. Fonseca is one of the founders of the EuTEACH program. In 2007 she received the Society for SAM’s International Chapter Recognition Award (Denver, USA).

Dr. Irene N. Melamed, MD, MSc: A pediatrician specialized in adolescent medicine. She is a cofounder of the Adolescent Health Section at the Children's Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Melamed is a Professor and Senior Researcher at the Bioethics Program of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences in Argentina - FLACSO (since 2005). She obtained her Master's Degree in Bioethics at the University of Barcelona (2008-2010).
Dr. Melamed facilitated the creation of networks of a community of practice within the Argentine Node - a consortium of 23 universities, organized by the Virtual Campus of Public Health, VCPH, PAHO (2008-2012). She serves as vice president of the Society of Integrated Adolescent Health where she actively participates in local educational initiatives as well as in the Latin American Region (since 2014). Dr. Melamed was awarded with the SAHM Southern Chapter Award (2017), and recently with the Global Forum on Bioethics in Research fellowship/Welcome Trust. Currently she is the Director of the Adolescence and Health as well as the author of the Bioethics´ Program Blog, FLACSO Argentina.

Dr. Lilian Wong, MD, MPH: Graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1994, Dr. Wong is a pediatrician trained in adolescent Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (2002). She completed a Master at the Public Health program at CUHK in 2008. Dr. Wong’s special interests are in infant feeding, eating disorders, psychosomatic disorders, substance abuse and child developmental disorders. She has been involved in clinical research and teaching of undergraduates in pediatrics and master students in public health.
Internationally, Dr. Wong was the President of the International Chapter of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (2005-2007) and Regional Vice President of the International Association for Adolescent Health (2009-2017). Locally, Dr. Wong served as the President of the Hong Kong Pediatric Society (2014-2016) and currently she is the Secretary General of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Pediatric Foundation. Dr. Wong together with other healthcare professionals has formulated the first “Proposal on Child Health Policy for Hong Kong”, submitted to the HKSAR government in 2015.

Dr. Abigail Harrison, MD: A consultant pediatrician and adolescent medicine physician at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) and lecturer in the department of Child and Adolescent Health at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Kingston, Jamaica. She received her undergraduate medical training and postgraduate training in Pediatrics at the UWI and then went on to complete a clinical fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. She is the founder and lead for the adolescent clinic and young families program at the UHWI.
Dr. Harrison’s research interests lie in varied areas in adolescent health including delivery of health care services to adolescents, adolescent resilience, and disordered eating behaviors in adolescents.
She works closely with the Adolescent Health Unit in the local Ministry of Health and is a member of the Adolescent Policy Working Group. She is currently working on the development of a proposal for a new postgraduate diploma in Adolescent Health and Advocacy at the UWI.
