Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
Course Information
Is this the right course for me?
‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector will give you an introduction to teaching adults – people over the age of compulsory education. Anyone who has a job where training or learning with adults is involved, even if this happens infrequently, will find this course helpful.
What will the course cover?
The course covers all the essentials to get things right from the start, so planning and preparation is covered early in the course, as is the topic of teaching methods and assessment. You will be introduced to various approaches to the process of learning and encouraged to discuss how these ideas fit with your ideas on effective teaching and training. Communication and feedback are key skills for the teacher and the course will give you some ideas for these.
The commitment needed to come on the programme
The course is fully funded by the Children’s Workforce Development Council. Your organization may be invoiced for the costs for students that register but do not complete. The commitment needed is to be able to:
- Attend all five days of the taught programme. To participate in the activities on the course including delivering short sessions to fellow students – this is done in a supportive and friendly environment.
- To complete an online assessment of your Literacy and Numeracy levels, at and bring along the print out to the course. This will be carried out during the course time. This is required, even for those that have achieved Level 2, because it is the experience of undertaking the process that is necessary. It is not necessary for students to achieve Level 2 during PTLLS, but to be working towards it.
- To undertake up to 30 hours of self-study in addition to the taught sessions
- To have the support of your organization. To reach agreement with them regarding your attendance on the course and self-study, and whether or not any of this is conducted in paid time.
- Complete your Portfolio by the deadline given at the start of the programme.
Will I get a qualification?
This course which is part of a group of teaching courses from the University of Warwick’s Centre for Excellence in Initial Teacher Training which has been endorsed by LLUK and SVUK and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (used to be the DfES), as matching the requirements for teacher training in the lifelong learning sector which come into effect in September 2007. You will receive recognition of this achievement from the university.
Your training and learning role
You do not have to be currently involved in delivering any training or learning with adults in order to take part in this course. If you are training currently, the course will be even more relevant for you.
Our Teaching
The tutors for this course are Elaine Griffiths and Jean Garner. Both have the appropriate level of Teaching Qualifications and have been mentored for this programme by WMCETT. They are also widely experienced and familiar with voluntary and community organizations and children and young peoples’ settings. The course will be delivered by active learning, in group discussions, in interaction between tutors and ‘trainee’. Being receptive to new ideas is a skill which is invaluable so sharing your ideas on training and learning with the group participants and reflecting on experience will be the main focus of the sessions.
