Aims / To provide student midwives with the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to enable them to deliver and co-ordinate safe, competent, compassionate and woman centred care.
To provide students with the opportunity to meet the NMC competencies and Essential Skills Clusters for progression from Stage 1 to Stage 2 and to integrate learning from Stage 1 modules to midwifery practice
Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of this module the students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to work more independently with less direct supervision in a safe and increasingly confident way to extend their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for progression to stage two (NMC 2009)
  1. Demonstrate achievement of the NMC competencies for progression from stage one to stage two (NMC 2009) in the following domains:
Domain 1: Effective midwifery practice
Domain 2: Professional and ethical practice
Domain 3: Developing the individual midwife and others
Domain 4: Achieving quality care through evaluation and research
Content / In addition to meeting the generic competencies, the module addresses midwifery specific clinical skills which are mapped against the Essential Skills Clusters for entry to the register (NMC 2009):
  • Communication,
  • Initial consultation between the woman and the midwife
  • Normal labour and birth
  • Initiation and continuance of breastfeeding
  • Baby Friendly Initiative: Breastfeeding workshop - understanding positioning and attachment
  • Baby Friendly Initiative: Breastfeeding workshop - hand expressing
  • Baby Friendly Initiative: Breastfeeding workshop - teaching breastfeeding skills
  • Medicines management
Within clinical practice students will be supervised in a range of midwifery care settings, which will include working alongside multi-professional teams, outside agencies and service users/women.
Teaching and learning strategies / Some taught sessions will be undertaken in the classroom to prepare students for practice. This will include practical sessions, simulation, on line resources and enquiry based learning using reflection from clinical practice. The majority of learning and teaching will take place in the clinical environment facilitated by sign-off mentors, mentors, clinical practitioners/specialists and supported by midwifery lectures.
Sharing the Woman’s Experience: This will be an observational role. Students will normally follow 1 - 2 women who are experiencing a normal pregnancy.
Learning in relation to numeracy and midwifery calculations will be facilitated through the use of Safe medicate software.
Service users will formatively assess any 2 skills from those listed in the Practice Assessment Document
Formative assessment of the skills in the Practice Assessment Document will start from week 3 of the Course (This is when students commence clinical practice)

Assessment tasks / By the end of Stage One the student midwife is required to complete an assessment of practice document which includes:
  • Satisfactory completion of NMC competencies for stage one (NMC 2009). This will contribute to 50% of the overall mark for the module.
  • Satisfactory completion of all midwifery skills as identified in the Practice Assessment Document. This will contribute to 50% of the overall mark for the module.
  • Passing the online assessment of numeracy related to medication management. Pass mark for stage one is 80% (no weighting).
All elements must be passed.
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / This module comprises of learning opportunities related to achievement of NMC Competencies and the Essential Skills Clusters for progression to Stage two of the Course. It aims to integrate knowledge from the other level 5 modules so that students can develop competent midwifery practice in a range of services and settings. Through sharing the woman’s experience, students will be able to understand the impact of pregnancy, birth and the integration of a new baby into family life.
