Job Purpose:
The main functions of the job will be to:
To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to participate in School administration.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop an independent research group based in the appropriate Academic Unit, through publications, grant applications and supervision of research staff and students.
  • Establish a principal research theme in support of the Faculty of Medicine’s research strategy in collaboration with other groups by developing a stream of grant funding and original scientific papers, and by supervising and training of research staff and postgraduate students.
  • Establish a national reputation for research and the enhancement of learning and teaching practice by sustaining the regular dissemination of findings through leading peer-reviewed publications, presenting results at conferences, or exhibiting work at other appropriate events
  • Plan and develop innovative research proposals, projects and funding bids as self contained items or as part of a broader programme.
  • Be a key member of the team delivering and developing clinical pharmacology teaching to medical students in the BM5 and BM4 undergraduate programmes. This will be achieved by acting as a resource for course co-ordinators and other staff to provide subject expertise in pharmacology and helping students (in groups or individually) with topics related to pharmacology. Responsibilities will include co-ordinating components of the programme and contributing to curriculum design, timetabling, assessments and development of learning resources. Provide expert advice in own subject area to other staff and students.
  • Monitor, evaluate and revise course design to ensure excellence and coherence. Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement, planning and developing innovative contributions to learning, teaching and assessment methods within the Faculty as appropriate.
  • Carry out management and administrative tasks associated with specified research funding, including risk assessment of project activities, organisation of project meetings and documentation and preparation of annual reports. To oversee and implement procedures required to ensure accurate and timely formal reporting and financial control.

Special Requirements:
To attend national and international conferences for the purpose of disseminating research results. To be available to participate in residential fieldwork, in the UK or overseas, according to own area of subject specialism. A normal expectation would be of one such course per annum.
Regular travel will be necessary between teaching venues at Southampton General Hospital and the Highfield Campus of the University of Southampton.
Availability will be required for timetabled teaching sessions and for meetings scheduled during normal office hours (Mon to Fri, 09.00-17.30)

Relevant BSc or equivalent

Other relevant research or education qualifications
Significant postdoctoral research experience in laboratory-based biomedical research, including publications and research presentations

Teaching qualification (PCAP or equivalent)
Track record of development and delivery of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Demonstrated success in delivering learning outcomes
