2. JOB TITLE: YMCA DORSET RELIEF PLAY LEADER

3. RESPONSIBLE TO: YMCA Dorset Playschemes Manager

4. JOB PURPOSE:

To provide a caring, secure, safe and inviting environment, by preparing individual planning with support from the Dorset Play projects Manager, and to organise appropriate adapted activities for all children and young people with severe complex needs aged between 5 and 17 years to participate in during the main school holidays. All Young people are nominated by social care and health to access the sessions which will run in four key areas of Dorset during the main school holidays. You will be expected to help write plans and adapt the provision according to the Young people that will attend each session and ensure we continue to add value to young lives by providing experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual through the Dorset YMCA Way.

The role has a statutory, occupational requirement to ensure the safety and welfare of all children using our services. The post holder will take responsibility for ensuring safeguarding children is a priority, and follow both YMCA safeguarding policy and Local Authority statutory guidance.

5. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Short Break Holiday sessions Duties and Responsibilities

Staff supervision

·  Ensure all Staff, Visitors and Volunteer are fully supported and supervised at all times

·  To be a part of a team of 8/12 play workers and delegate key roles to staff/ volunteers/ Buddies at each location.

·  Support staff inductions

·  Lead Team meetings

·  Deal effective with staff and volunteers with Managers support if needed

·  To share best practice

Activity Planning

·  Engage in Pre playday preparation

·  To ensure that the play schemes are enjoyable and run safely at the locations set by the Dorset Branch Manager.

·  To ensure all activities are inclusive or adapted to suit most needs where ever possible.

Liasion

·  To ensure good, effective communication is maintained with the Play Manager, Parents, Children and the other staff and Volunteers at all times and that accurate records expected by YMCA and Ofsted are fully maintained.

·  To ensure confidentiality at all times

Supervision and care of children

·  To act in the interests of your own safety & the health and safety of others always using best practice.

·  Take an active part in any staff training prior to the schemes running, and assist with the planning and implementing activities that will stimulate and challenge the children you will be supporting.

·  Ensure that activities are carried out in a safe and responsible manner

·  Ensure risk assessments are completed.

·  To actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the work place, ensure staff and volunteers observe setting practices, procedures, and company policies to keeping everyone safe from harm.

Direct Playwork

·  Ensure that a wide range of creative and enjoyable activities are offered covering all element of Play to include encouragement of social interaction, physical skills, intellectual stimulation, creative and cultural skills, emotional and wellbeing support as well as appropriate levels of risky Play.

Other

·  To promote the aims and the objectives of Bournemouth YMCA and the Dorset Play Projects

·  To ensure the setting has a high standard of physical and emotional care as well as level of hygiene and cleanliness.

·  To be responsible for Health and safety standards appropriate to the needs of the children and ensuring all accident/ Incident/ My concerns records are completed and shared with the Manager daily and procedures followed.

·  Ensure child is collected by parent / or known collector only.

·  Anything reasonably requested by the management of the organisation

·  Lead in personal care tasks such as feeding, medication and toileting as required and ensured documented fully.

In addition to the job set out in this job description the worker may, from time to time, be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary within his or her capabilities and status to meet the needs of YMCA Bournemouth.

6. SCALE AND IMPACT

The postholder will work within the YMCA Children’s Work department. The post is funded by Dorset County Council Short Breaks and will cease to exist if this funding is withdrawn in the future. He/she will work within the set budgets controlled by the YMCA Dorset Play Projects Manager and Deputy Director.

7. DISCRETION TO ACT

The person appointed will have discretion to act on a day-to-day basis to ensure that the work is satisfactorily delivered. He/she will be directly responsible to the YMCA Dorset Play Projects Manager.

8. ENVIRONMENT

The post will require the worker to work between the hours of 7.30 and 6.30pm and will be based at various venues across Dorset. The appointed person will need to travel across Dorset to run sessions and attend key meetings.

SECTION B: PLAY LEADER PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential / Desirable
Skills, aptitude, knowledge and experience
·  Previous experience of caring for, or working with children aged 5-17 years with disabilities in a voluntary or paid capacity
·  A commitment to the provision of high quality childcare as well as understanding of safeguarding practices
·  A positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through teamwork and training opportunities
·  Good written and verbal skills for report writing, maintaining child records and providing feedback to parents/carers and colleagues / ·  Experience in Line Managing staff, including involvement in induction, supervision, and appraisals
·  Interest in the care, learning and development of children
·  Experience of driving a minibus / larger vehicle (transit Van)
Personal qualities
·  Good organisational, record keeping, punctuality and planning skills
·  Ability to lead and coordinate a team and help develop their skills and abilities.
·  Excellent communication skills, with children, colleagues, advisors and parents/carers.
·  Patience
·  Reliability and trustworthiness
·  A positive approach to inclusive practice, with children and colleagues
·  Enthusiasm for working with children
·  The person will be 18+ due to the nature of the role / ·  Flexibility – occasionally working hours might be changed, e.g. if the setting hosts a Parent’s Evening

Qualifications
·  Completion of a CWDC recognised Level 3 Playwork / childcare qualification, or similar
·  Completion of Safeguarding Awareness course
·  A positive approach to gaining further qualifications
·  Some understanding of the importance of Health & Safety and Food Hygiene in the workplace

The YMCA is a Christian organisation and the worker must be fully supportive of the Association’s aims and purposes. Team working is essential within this role. / ·  Completion of a recognised Level 4 Playwork qualification, or be working towards completion
·  Health & Safety certificate
·  First Aid certificate
·  Completion of other relevant courses

This post requires a DBS check as there may be periods of unsupervised access to children. An Enhanced DBS and satisfactory references would be obtained prior to commencement of employment.

SECTION C: TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. SALARY

YMCA Bournemouth Grade A - £17,826 - £26,728 per annum, pro rata, level on scale according to

qualifications and experience.

2. HOURS OF WORK

As and when agreed.

3. PAID LEAVE ENTITLEMENT

None, except if any periods worked should entitle the post holder to paid leave under the Working

Time Regulations.

4. SICK PAY PROVISION

None.

5. PENSIONS ENTITLEMENT

None, unless any period of work and payments qualify the worker to participate in the YMCA

Bournemouth designated stakeholder pension scheme.

6. PERIOD OF NOTICE OFFERED AND REQUIRED

Given the relief status of this work, no notice provision is applicable to this employment. However, it

would be helpful if the worker no longer wish to be considered for relief work to let his/her Head of

Department know.

7. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The employment will be subject to satisfactory references and a DBS Enhanced Disclosure. This post is subject to the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 and (Exceptions) (Amendment) order 1986.

8. IN SERVICE TRAINING

The worker will be expected to participate in a YMCA induction training programme. Encouragement and opportunity will be given for further in-service training.

9. MISCELLANEOUS / TRAVEL

Work will be centred at key locations across Dorset with a base in the Wimborne/Ferndown area and it will be necessary to travel within Bournemouth and wider Dorset.
