DETAILING DIGESTION

Have a group member lay down on the large piece of butcher paper with their head looking to the side. Trace their body to mid thigh. You will use this human form to draw the digestive system. Since mucus is made by all parts of the alimentary canal, draw the alimentary canal in blue. After you have drawn the digestive system, label all digestive system anatomy on the RIGHT side of the drawing. Use your notes, an Anatomy textbook, or a Campbell biology textbook to help you with this.

On the LEFT side of your poster, you will show the chemical digestion that is occurring. 1) Write out the four macromolecules and the enzyme(s) that causes them to hydrolyze into monomers. Use the format below & draw it in the correct color as noted under “color code.” 2) Underneath each macromolecule, state where digestion begins for that macromolecule and underneath the monomers, state where digestion ends. 3) You will also be making up a symbol to represent that macromolecule (ex: circle, square, triangle, *) Once you have done this, draw those symbols in your “poster person” to indicate where each macromolecule began & then ended digestion (you will draw each symbol twice on your poster with the appropriate color according to the “color code”).

MACROMOLECULE MONOMER

(starts digestion) (completes digestion)

symbol for macromolec. (ex: ▲)

Color Code:

·  Proteins & Protein Digesting Enzymes: RED

·  Carbohydrates & Carbohydrate Digesting Enzymes: BROWN

·  Fats & Fat Digesting Enzymes (plus other fluids): YELLOW

·  Nucleic Acid Digesting Enzymes: PURPLE

Enzymes to include (be sure to use color codes above when

placing them in your chemical reaction equation):

·  Lipases

·  Nucleases

·  Pepsinogen/Pepsin

·  Proteases

·  Salivary amylase

·  Pancreatic amylase

Other fluids to include (be sure to state their function):

Use the appropriate color to indicate where bile & HCl are located on your digestive system drawing (you have already drawn the alimentary canal in blue). Then, on the LEFT side of your poster underneath the macromolecule section, state the function of each of these in a list:

·  Bile (GREEN)

·  HCl (ORANGE)

·  Mucous function in the stomach (BLUE)

RUBRIC (15 points)

·  Macromolecules, enzymes, symbol on drawing,

where digestion begins & ends (2 pts each

macromolecule; 8 pts total)

·  Anatomy correctly labeled (4 total pts)

·  Bile Function & Location: 1 pt

·  Mucus Function in the stomach: 1 pt

·  HCl Function & Location: 1 pt
