Designing a Quilt Sample

Objective: Design quilt patterns using transformations

Due Date: April 20, 2012 before the bell rings. No late work accepted. If you are tardy, your project is late.

Materials: 4 – 8x 8 pieces of white paper (no lined or graph paper)

Ruler

Colored pencils

Clear tape

Designing Instructions:

1.  No computer generated designs allowed.

2.  Use your ruler to mark the midpoints of each side of the 8”x 8” square work area.

3.  Draw a line segment, beginning at either a midpoint of a side or a vertex of the square and ending at a midpoint or vertex of the square.

4.  Continue drawing segments as described in step 2 using any vertex or midpoint created by previous segments until you have created at least 12 regions. At least one of the new regions you create when drawing each new segment must be a triangle.

5.  There should be no symmetry in your design pattern.

6.  Make sketches of squares showing step-by-step designing instructions as shown in class. This sheet should be turned in with your final quilt. Be sure to write your name on this sheet.

7.  Color your patterned square. Every region created must be in different color. You should design and color your square so that it is readily apparent when the square has been rotated or reflected.

8.  Create 3 transformations (one of each type) sequentially from the original as follows: original → translation → reflection → rotation and attach all 4 together using tape along the backside to form a 16” x 16” finished project. Use the back of each to identify the original and each transformation. Each transformation must be in the position shown below.
