DESIGN BUILD PROJECTS

The project is located on Route 35 (Meherrin Road) west of the Town of Courtland. The purpose of the project is to replace the existing structurally deficient bridge over the Nottoway River with a new two lane bridge and limited roadway approach work. The project is just west of the Southampton County Line. The project is approximately 0.3 miles in length. The Design-builder is permitted to fully close the Meherrin Road in the immediate proximity to the existing bridge for a period not to exceed 365 calendar days.
The anticipated scope of work to be performed by the Design-Builder will include, but not be limited to, the design and construction of the following:
- New bridge construction
- Roadway improvements to the approaches to the new bridge
- Demolition and removal of the existing bridge
- Right of Way acquisition
- Drainage
- Storm Water Management
- Signing and pavement markings
- Erosion and sedimentation controls
- Utility relocations
- Transportation Management Plan

The purpose of this project is to improve safety and operations by constructing a westbound truck climbing lane for heavy vehicles climbing the steep grade and to provide additional safety and operational improvements within the Project limits, including at the two interchanges. The project limits are from the interchanges of West Market Street and Route 7 and Route 9 and Route 7. The project length is 2.6 miles. The project includes construction of a westbound truck climbing lane on Route 7 between the West Market Street and Route 9 interchanges, new roundabouts and ramp improvements at the Route 7/Route 9 interchange, additional turn lanes at the Route 7 and West Market Street interchange, relocation of the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail at the Route 7 and Route 9 interchange, construction of an underpass beneath the Route 7 eastbound on-ramp, modifications beneath the existing Route 9 bridge over Route 7 to accommodate the trail relocation beneath the bridge, modifications to the median crossovers, ingress, and egress at various locations within the project limits, and construction of a local subdivision street to improve access management.

Design-Build Project Narrative

This project improves safety by widening Route 3 from a two lane undivided highway to a four lane divided highway. This is the final section of the Route 3 corridor to be widening to four lanes. The project will begin approximately 4.1 miles east of Route 29 and extends to approximately 3.8 miles west of the Culpeper County and Orange County line. The project length is approximately 5.16 miles. The Project consists of the design and construction of a four lane divided highway with graded shoulders and appropriate turn lanes. The Project was procured as a two phase design build project.
The Project shall include, but not be limited to, the following design and construction elements:

(c)Milling and overlay of existing pavement
(d)Survey
(e)Geotechnical investigation
(f)Erosion and sedimentation control
