Design Officer

Reports to:Director of Communications and Public Affairs

Base:Norfolk

Department Overview

The Communications and Public Affairs Department is comprised of seven posts and is led by the Director of Communications and Public Affairs. The Director is a member of the Executive which guides World Horse Welfare in fulfilling the charity’s objectives.

The purpose of the Communications and Public Affairs Department is to raise the profile of World Horse Welfare, gain greater support, engage and retain existing supporters, advance the charity’s campaign aims and act as the guardian of the charity’s reputation and image.

The principle roles of this post are:

The Design Officer is responsible for coordinating and undertaking the creative design and production of promotional literature, publications and display material for the charity, including its four Rescue and Rehoming Centres, while safeguarding the World Horse Welfare brand.

Key Relationships:

  • Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the Communications Officer and the Film and Photography Officer.
  • Staff across the charity who require design and production services.

Duties

  • Work as part of the Communications Team to implement World Horse Welfare’s Communications Plans.
  • Undertake and coordinate the production and design of specific World Horse Welfare materials as requested including:
  • World Horse Welfare News
  • Posters, display boards and banners
  • Leaflets and booklets
  • Advertising artwork
  • Together for Animals newsletter
  • Field Officer evidence books.
  • Web graphics
  • Other artwork and production as may be necessary
  • Coordinate and deliver the following:
  • Production timelines
  • Design and layout
  • Proofing process and final production
  • Scanning and internal printing
  • Collating artwork for external printing.
  • Work with the relevant members of the Communications and Public Affairs Team and other Departments to ensure that the visual communications emanating from World Horse Welfare are high-quality, engaging and on-brand.
  • Work with the team and other staff to ensure that the layout and design of publications have the maximum impact possible.
  • Actively participate in Communications Department meetings and brainstorming sessions, seeking to better visually communicate the work of the charity.
  • Organise and arrange meetings related to the development of communications Coordinate and monitor associated timetables and deadlines.
  • Assist in the evaluation, review and coordination of plans and activities undertaken in relation to the production and development of the charity’s communications publications, as well as the activities of the Department as a whole. Compile reports, statistical records, evidence of success and impact.

Other Duties

  • To comply with the policies of World Horse Welfare to ensure that risks within the working environment are reduced as low as reasonably practicable (to include completing risk assessments and maintaining files).
  • To raise any health and safety concerns with line managers.
  • Prepare information for quarterly report and KPIs.
  • Undertake other related tasks as directed by the Director of Communications and Public Affairs.

Health and Safety:

  • To comply with the policies of World Horse Welfare to ensure that risks within the working environment are reduced as low as reasonably practicable
  • To raise any health and safety concerns with your Line Manager or the Health & Safety Officer based at Head Office

Person Specification

  • Experience in a graphic design and/or publications design role ideally backed up with a relevant qualification
  • The ability to design high impact materials quickly and efficiently
  • Experience/knowledge of the design and production of web graphics/design for technology (desireable)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Pro-active, enthusiastic, highly-motivated, flexible
  • Capable of working with people at all levels, in a variety of spheres
  • Trustworthy and dependable – sets realistic deadlines and meets them
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Well-organised, conscientious, attention to detail, professional
  • Commitment to excellence in achieving the World Horse Welfare objectives
  • Willingness to take responsibility, to prioritise workload and work to tight deadlines
  • Interest and sympathy with the aims and activities of the World Horse Welfare
  • Willing to learn and a sense of humour
  • Computer literate – in Microsoft, Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and associated design packages
  • Be prepared to work late occasionally should workload require it, travel within the UK and occaisionally stay away from home if required.
