Description of Duties

The Executive Directorserves as the senior officer of the Haltech Regional Innovation Centreand reports to its Board of Directors. In this capacity, the Executive Director will initiate and execute strategies consistent with Haltech's mission, vision and strategic planand objectives, as established withthe Board.

Haltech’s mandate is to helptechnology entrepreneurs and companies develop and transform their ideas and product innovations into well positioned, growing commercial ventures. To support this mandate, Haltech takes an active role supportingand partnering with other innovation-oriented organizations and initiatives in rapidly growing Halton region, comprised of the major communities of Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills.

Haltechis a not-for-profit business support organizationthatreceives its principal funding from the Government of Ontario. Haltech enhances this core funding with additional sources, such as corporate sponsorships. Haltech is one of eighteen Regional Innovation Centres across the province and is a member of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs.

Specifically, Haltech assists technology entrepreneurs:

  • Develop their ideas and establish their companies.
  • Commercialize their products / services.
  • Scale-up their businesses.

To do so, Haltech provides its clients with:

  • Personalized business support services.
  • Entrepreneurship training and networking opportunities.
  • Extensive mentorship programs, including comprehensive business advisory services with C-suite level Entrepreneurs in Residence.
  • Access to a spectrum of funding opportunities, and
  • Connectivity to specialized expertise and resources in the technology eco-system.

Core Functions of the Executive Director:

  1. Reporting to the Haltech Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for:
  2. Formulating policies and making recommendations to the Board.
  3. Advising the Board on critical priorities.
  4. Working with the Board in developing and executing Haltech’s multi-year Strategic Plan.
  5. Developing and executing an annual work plan.
  6. Organizing and supporting annual general meetings, Board meetings and Board committee meetings.
  7. Overseeing the preparation, distribution and retention of supporting documents, meeting agendas and minutes of all Board and Board Committee meetings.
  8. Supporting the Treasurer with respect to critical funding applications and reports.
  9. Assisting with the onboarding of new Board members.
  10. Informing the Board promptly on accomplishments, opportunities and challenges – the latter with recommended solutions.
  1. Recruiting, supervising and supporting Haltech employees and managing Entrepreneurs-In-Residence and other mentorship resources.
  2. Overseeing Haltech’s consulting and advisory services to clients and members, both on premise and virtual, to assist in accelerating their growth and ensuring their success. This includes collaboration with existing economic development programs and partners in Halton and connection of entrepreneurs to those resources.
  3. Recruiting and growing network members by working with Halton-basedpublic institutions, businesses and entrepreneurs and business support organizations.
  4. Managing the marketing and promotion of Haltech’s capabilities in collaboration with partner organizations and complementing other business support services available in the region.
  5. Overseeing resource and revenue development to create and maintain a sustainable funding model for Haltech’s operations and programming.
  6. Preparing annual and quarterly financial reports and operational reports for provincial funding partners.
  7. Maintaining a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation and commercialization.

Qualifications and Capabilities:

  • Proven ability to provide highly relevant and impactful advice, mentorship and programs to tech companies and their leadership teams.
  • Proven financial management skills including the ability to assemble and manage an operating budget. Demonstrated expertise in innovative financial management including familiarity in working with variable funding/revenue sources and tight timelines.
  • Ability to create and lead high-impact collaborations, including the ability to structure co-creation, co-funding, co-marketing and execution initiatives to advance mutually beneficial goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive and maintain win-win strategic relationships with public, non-profit and private sector partners.
  • Demonstrated experience reporting to and/or serving on boards of directors, board committees. Experience working with non-profit boards would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of and connectivity with Halton’s businesses community, Halton entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem and the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs.
  • Demonstrated history of fundraising and resource development for either a non-profit or a for profit entity would be a significant plus, as would an expertise in grant writing, new revenue generation and capital raising.
  • Knowledge or experience in building and running an innovative tech company or organization.
  • Experience or knowledge of working with provincial government programs / funding and in particular those related to entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Ability to develop and execute programs for recruiting clients and members.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain talented resources for advising and mentoring clients.
  • Experience acting as an organization’s public spokesperson.
  • Effective verbal and written communicator with all stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate revenue via sponsorships and obtaining public / private sector funding for clients.
  • Strong personal network that can be tapped into to further Haltech’s objectives, including raising capital.
  • Strategically oriented leader who can also focus on operations and achieve results.
  • Ability to identify challenges and opportunities and bring solutions and recommendations to the Board.
  • Demonstrated ability in supervising and coaching staff and team building.
  • Ability to initiate and execute both strategic and budget planning processes.
  • Experience in developing, measuring and presenting program evaluation metrics.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining financial records and reports.
