Course Instructor

Nancy R. Kirsch PT, DPT, PhD is a professor of physical therapy and Director of The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, NJ. She provides school based physical therapy services in Morris County. She currently serves on the Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, Division of Consumer Affairs. She is Vice President of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy, and Chair of the national APTA Reference Committee. Dr. Kirsch presents on topics in ethics and risk management on the national level at APTA and other professional meetings. Her academic and research interest is professional behavior and ethical decision making and she is determined to help the professional community become engaged in this dialogue. Dr. Kirsch writes a monthly column in PT in Motion Magazine, called Ethics in Practice.

Course Description:

This 2.5 credit Ethics Course is designed for therapists wishing to satisfy the mandatory Ethics requirement with an interactive problem solving course. It builds on previous ethics knowledge. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants are required to make ethical decisions every day while treating patients. This course will include facilitated discussion among participants regarding ethical practice and decision making in the realm of everyday physical therapy practice in a variety of settings. This course is interactive and will require participation on the part of those attending. If you prefer a more passive learning environment it is recommended you choose another course.

Educational Information

Certificates will be awarded to participants who attend the program, submit completed evaluation forms and sign the roster to verify attendance. The number of continuing education credits (CEUs) awarded will be based upon the number of hours attended and the requirements specified by the accreditation body.

Explanatory Note:

The Board of Physical Therapy Examiners anticipates requiring a 1.5 CE online jurisprudence assessment that will be offered in 2015. The mandatory 1.5 CE jurisprudence assessment can be combined with any ethics course of 2.5CE or higher to meet the 4.0 CE Ethics and Jurisprudence requirement for NJ licensure renewal.

2. Recognize an ethical situation.

3. Apply the principles of ethical decision making to actual ethical situations presented.
