Jonathan, son of Benjamin and Abigail, born May 23, 1786, was a seafaring man, and followed fishing along the Labrodor coast and also to foreign countries. During the War of 1812 he was on board of a Privateer and was captured at Dartmouth, and was taken prisoner with others of the crew by the British. He died at Portsmouth at the age of sevety and was buried at the Methodist Cemetery, His wife was a Miss Doval

Notes for JOHN SANFORD BROWNELL:

John Sanford, son of Jonathan was born on the bank of the Sakonnet River in the town of Portsmouth, RI and, like his father, became a seafaring man. During his earlier years he was engaged in fishing for others, but later he took up business for himself, chiefly menhaden fishing and the manufacture of oil. He also owned fishing vessels and was one of the first to use traps in the Sakonnet River. He lived to a ripe old age of 78, and died at home in Portsmouth and was laid to rest in the Methodist Cemetery, He was one of the organizers of the Methodist Church there and was a steward of the church for a number of years. In politics he was a Republican. He married Susanna Tallman, daughter of Thaler Tallman, and she died on the farm and was laid to rest with her husband. They had nine children.

9. JOHN M.8 BROWNELL (JOHN SANFORD7, JONATHAN6, BENJAMIN5, THOMAS4, JOSEPH3, GEORGE2, THOMAS1) was born October 22, 1853 in Portsmouth, RI. He married ELIZABETH MONROE December 24, 1874, daughter of WILLIAM MONROE and ELLEN. She was born September 01, 1860 in Portsmouth, RI.

Notes for JOHN M. BROWNELL:

Captain John M. Brownell, son of John Sanford Brownell, born in Portsmouth, RI, Oct 22, 1853 and attended school in Portsmouth and like his father and grandfather answered the call of the sea. He went to sea at tthe age of 10 and began menhaden fishing with his father, a business which he followed for the past forty years. At the age of 21 in 1875, he became the master of the fishing smack "Eunice Cobb" , in which he fished along the Atlantic coast. This vessel was owned by Leonard Brightman of Fall River. In 1880, he was master of the schooner, "Why Not" of which he was the owner and in 1883 he was commander of one of the first steamers engaged in the fishing business, the "Fearless" owned by the William J. Brightman & Co. of Tiverton and for 13 years he was commander. In 1894, Captain Brownell engaged in the coal business at Portsmouth and now also deals in hay and straw. He has built a dock on the Sakonnet Rover, this dock being the first passenger and freight wharf built on the Portsmouth side of the Sakonnet River, and there he has since been most successfully engaged in business. In 1889 Captain Brownell engaged in the finshing business on an extensive scale for himself, purchasing the steamer "Spy" which was owned by the Gladding and Co. of Newport. He bought the steamer "Portland" in 1903 he purchased the steamer "Frank S. Willard" and his vessels are now engaged in fishing all along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Charleston, SC. He has been most successful in his undertakings and is enterprising and progressive. Captain Brownell is a strong advocate of temperance and consistently votes for the prohibition ticket, having been the candidate of that party for State Senator from Portsmouth. He has served his town as special constable, and proved himself a most efficient public official. He is a consistent and devoted member of the Friends Society, and is liberal in his support of all charitable objects. He is just and straightforward in all his dealings with his fellow men and as a citizen enjoys and commands respect of all who know him for his many sterling traits of character. In Captain Brownell the needy and less fortunate have always found a very kind and generous friend and sympathizer.

In 1898, Captain Brownell built his comfortable home near his coal business, one of the finest in that section of the town. On Dec. 24, 1874, he married Elizabeth Monroe, who was borm in Portsmouth Sept. 1, 1860, daughter of William and Ellen Monroe, and grandaughter of david and Abby (Brownell) Monroe. Nine sons blessed this union.
