This is an update by David Addy , ( 10 January 2019 ) GGGSon of Ann Girdlestone of Gt Snoring , of information compiled by two key members and sundry other folk .

Edward Deacon Girdlestone compiled the notes in 1886 and Robert Baker Girdlestone published them in 1904 . Dates and information from censuses and other sourcese have now been added and/or corrected, to includes folk born upto ~ 1920 , there is information after this but it is left out to protect the privacy of the living ; those folk concerned will be able to place themselves , personal comments about early individuals appears in first person , as originally recorded at the time

The commentary originally gave only history to Legitimate Descendants bearing the name of Girdlestone , but now extends to strains of the family who fell upon hard times and limited extents to the Ladies who through marriage assumed other surnames, where information is available.

Thirteen consecutive generations are included , prefixed A – P , to show the generation, while the number following the letter indicates the place in the generation occupied by individual members of the family where more detail follows . Thus "C7' indicates an individual of the 3rd generation who stands in the 7th place from the top of it in order of primogeniture and detail. Numbers in brackets - ( xxxx ) were assigned to the individuals during compilation of the story using a database , they mean nothing else but can help you to follow that individual through the associated information.

It has been conjectured that the name “Girdlestone", is a corruption of "Kerdeston” , which is a name at once of a hamlet in the parish of Reepham, in a neighboring part of Norfolk, and of a family of high standing which lived there in the Middle Ages (Vide Bloomfield's History of Norfolk for some account of it). There is still an ancient cross in Reepham attributed to W de Kerdeston, and in the church, a beautiful tomb of a crusader which is said to commemorate a "de Kerdeston”. In the time of Henry VIII, the family counted among the 8 principal ones of the county, but it appears to have wholly disappeared from the village before A.D. 1536, as the church register, beginning that year does not contain the name.

For shortening some names have been reduced :

Is John the first son of the Head above or a younger brother to him ?

E8viii.ELIZABETH( 4314 ) 1691 - 176776mar to JOHN HEWITT

only one Thomas is found buried at Thornage of these parents , and that was in March 1658 , so when there next son is born I believe they had a home baptism , recorded with no note Dec 1658 then a public baptism the April following when he would be received into the church with the congregation , rather than being two people

Elizabeth thought to be born ~1660 , but found on the sharman site , which appears to follow course with all other info , to have been born in 1691 , fits to other known info at this date . – dates make me wonder if she was actually a child of what appears now as her brother Richard instead ? – haven’t found any info about her as yet tho so I’ll leave her here for now

D2THOMAS GIRDLESTONE4 ( Thomas3 Richard2 Head1, 2154 ) bap 1640 at Thornage > 1669 ,he married at Letheringsett on 11th Sep 1669 to MARY HODGSON ( 2155 ) , Thomas was still living at Thornage at the time of marriage .

E24iv.WILLIAM ( 2519 ) ------mar 1697 to ANN PLEASANCE

E25v.ROBERT ( 2522 ) ------mar ---- to ANN ----

- Reasoning for Edmund , William & Robert as children of Robert & Faith is that they are living in and around Sharrington , There is no mention of them in the other 2 families living in Thornage & Letheringsett and no mention in Richards or Thomas’s wills , but can not prove it as the Parish records are missing for this time period .

- Edmund would have to be among the first born or else he would be too young if this is his marriage.

Gen 5

E1RICHARD GIRDLESTONE5 (Richard4 Thomas3 Richard2 Head1 , 2150 ) ~1652 - 1723 , buried Nov 9th in Letheringsett , he was a yeoman & had property in Kelling , Holt , Letheringsett & Thornage , his will was proved in 1723 .

he married ~1682 in L’Sett or Kelling to MARY ------ ( 2181 ),

E2 JOHN GIRDLESTONE5 ( Richard4 Thomas3 Richard2 Head1 , 2130 ) born ~1653 of Kelling Yeoman , single man married by Licence on 12th Oct 1707 to SARAH FOORD ( 2131 ) 1690 – 1750 ? , single woman , at Baconsthorpe Church – daughter of Charles Foord ( 2146 ) , John died through a fall from his horse and was buried at Kelling 8th Jan 1718, his will being proved in April of that year & was dated Jan 1713. This was a fortunate marriage for the Girdlestone family, not only on financial grounds, but because the offspring of this marriage became thereby Founder's Kin at Winchester and NewCollege, Oxford

I believe this is the Sarah buried at Edgefield on 1st Nov 1750 , after John’s death she would most likely have lived with one of the sons at their properties – and one is mentioned below in Edgefield , no other recordings of a Sarah are as yet known for that parish so assumed this lady .

From College record info for Caius , This John may be a farmer of Letheringsett at theearly pointbut moved to Kelling as a grazier by 1738 as in Zurie’s college notes.

F9viii.ZURISHADDAI ( 2137 ) 1719 - 176748mar 1748 to cousin SARAH HEWITT

*Zurishaddai G bn 1698 – there was supposedly a record of John having a son born in 1698 , but as sarah would only be 9 yrs then this would be another mother , if he actually existed

“ John lived at Kelling in the capacity of steward to Mr John Lang, ( the principal land-owner and the Lord ofthe Manor, of Kelling and certain neighbouring parishes ) he also held a farm under him. They were further connected by the fact that they married two sisters -Mr Lang's Second wife being Phebe Ford / Foord ( his first wife being Dorothy Clark of Notts. Whom he married on 28th Mar 1703 at Baconsthorpe ) , and John Girdlestone in 1704 having married sister Sarah Ford (=A.2) This last named marriage was celebrated in Baconsthorpe by the then Rector the Rev Valentine Haywood who was married to Elizabeth Ford, an elder sister of Messrs Lang’s and Girdlestone 's wives,

he made his will in January 1713, and by it he gave his household goods to Sarah, his wife; his stock was to be sold for the benefit of his sons Richard, Thomas, and Joseph. His Edgefield estate was finally to go to his eldest son John, and his Salthouse property to Richard. He also speaks of an estate hired of his cousin, John Lang, and refers to his younger son, Henry, and his daughters Dorothy and Sarah. His. cousin, John Lang, was made trustee, and was one of the witnesses to the will.

John’s wife being distantly related to William de Wykeham ( 4294 ), some of his descendants were able to enjoy, while they lasted, the privileges accruing from such kinship, by gaining admission to Winchester College and New College, Oxford, as “Founders kin". (See, eg, D.21, E.13, and 3666 ) In "Fairbairns Crests”, and in Plate 27, No 29, of a "Book of Family Crests" published by Washbourne, 1840, the "Girdlestone" crest is described as “A griffin's head, gorged with a bar Dancette'e in beak two darts in saltirewise". When, about A.D. 1839, Samuel Girdlestone ( 3615 ) was raised to the rank of Queen's Counsel, his armorial bearings were formally blazoned on a parchment by the College of Heralds. The Motto is “Veillez ne craignez pas” That parchment later belonged to Beatrice Harvey ( 3629 ) only child of Emily

Sarah nee Foord was according to a fragment of her parent's birth-register "born the 26th day of Oct : Between two and three of the clock, in the Afternoon: which wasupon a Sunday in the year of our Lord 1690 [ ? – appears to be a Thursday to me ] ." and therefore was aged 17 at the time of her marriage to John , who was then 54yrs .

This family was given in the RBG document as living in Sharrington and presumedly born there , but no matching baptisms were found there , however a matching family was baptised in Field Daliing , so did they move later leaving their roots , this theory matches with the date of the marriage in 1684 in Edgefield – no baps their to this name of couple , but is Edmond too young ?? – the below is therefore a composite at present ; kids given in the RBG doc didn’t have specific baptism dates and were only 5 in number , indicated by *.

F2JOHN GIRDLESTONE6( John5Richard4 Thomas3 Richard2Head1 ) ( 2132 B.1 )1709 – 1749 , baptized 1709 at Kelling , There is some uncertainty about his later life but I think he became a surgeon at Holt ; if so, he died in August 1749 , he married to DEBORAH BACON ( 2190 )

Their Children :

i.ANN GIRDLESTONE7 ( 2278 ) bn , & bap Apr 12 1747, buried Jun 12 1748 at Holt

ii.SARAH G( 2279 C.1 ) bn & bap 1749 at Holt , she is said to have married Col / Major Hamilton of Bath and died there at an advanced age.

In his will, which was witnessed by his brother Zurishaddai Girdlestone and Hannah Foorde, he leaves property in the market-place of Holt to his wife, but does not name her. What did he do with his Edgefield property? Apparently his widow remarried captain. Johnson, whose great grandson, Henry John Johnson ( son of the Rev Paul J. of Runton near Cromer) died on 9/3/88 at a great age.

B.A.caius Coll 1731 M.A. 1735

It is probably incorrect that he was a Surgeon, (as, I think C 11 informed me) No doubt he was a clergyman for There was a "Rev" John Girdlestone, known in the early traditions of the family as "Bishop of Cley - on the Sea" - (called “Bishop", I suppose, because of the influence he exercised; and he certainly was reputed to be "studious beyond most men of his age" -) And the present Rector of Cley informs me that a Rev John Girdlestone became Rector of Cley in A.D. 1736 - a date which suits well the B.A. degree taken in 1731 by a John Girdlestone at caius Coll. Moreover, there is no record at either Oxford or cambridge of any second John Girdlestone taking a degree about that time) [Probably this is the Rev John G mentioned in the ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’ as having been presented in 1749 to the rectory of Town Banningham, Norfolk]

See College History page.

F3RICHARD GIRDLESTONE6( John5Richard4 Thomas3 Richard2 Head1 ) ( 2239 B.2 ) 1710 > 1754 , I believe born at kelling due to the previous and later born three , then moving to Baconsthorpe at marriage and for the birth of daughter Sarah / Susan if she’s there’s , then moving onto Plumstead & town barningham , a farmer he married or was the partner of DOROTHY BROWN( 3641 ) possibly this person is an emalgamation of 2 partnerships , but no notes found to support this as yet - 1st Miss Brown of Barningham and apparently secondly Dorothy ?.

Their Children : baptisms at Barningham Norwood

Richard, bn & bap at Kelling in 1710. he became a farmer living at Town Barningham and Plumstead , not sure in which , and is reported to have been an immense size of man , three yards round his body , His uncle Richard ( 2150 ) who was probably his godfather, left to him his Kelling, Holt, Thornage, and Letheringsett properties in 1723-5, whilst giving £10 to each of the other brothers and sisters.

F4THOMAS GIRDLESTONE6( JOHN5RICHARD4 THOMAS3 RICHARD2Head1 ) ( 2240 B.3) 1711 - ? , born & bap 1711 in Kelling . unmarried and left no children . Is supposed to have emigrated to New York or did he become the tanner in Holt who died in 1757 and was buried at Kelling ? ( could have gone to New york and returned later ? )
