Notes for WILLIAM HACKNEY SMITH:
William Hackney Smith was a farmer and also a Justice of the Peace.
All received a limited education but were well informed and extensive readers. William Hackney Smith's father, Hackney, died when William was only 12 so he stayed on the old homestead with his mother until he was 17. At that point he was employed as a farm laborer until August 16, 1861. He then enlisted in Company A, 33rd Indiana Volunteers Infantry and served with that regiment until the close of the war. He mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky in August of 1865. He was wounded twice; once at Thompson Station, Tennessee on March 5, 1863-the brigade to which he belonged was captured but exchanged after one month.
He participated in the Battle of Resaca, Dulles Woods, Culp's Farm, Kennessaw Mountain and all of the battles of the Atlantic campaign and Sherman's march to the sea. He mustered out at July 21, 1865 as a corporal.
After his return home, he resided in Adams Township, engaged in agriculture and bought a farm in 1872. He and his wife were members of the Christian Church and advocates of the Temperance cause. Mr. Smith was a Republican.
