1.DANIEL MINNEY
The first traceable ancestor of the Minney line appears in the
tax records of LebanonTownship, Hunterdon County, New Jersey from
1778 to 1785, along with his brother, Peter Minney. In May 1778,
Daniel paid taxes on 100 acres of land, 4 horses, 8 cattle and 7 pigs.
In February 1780, he paid taxes on 8 acres of land 3 horses and 7
cattle.
Daniel may have been a weaver or a dealer in woolen cloth.
Records of the Frandin Fulling Mill located near HamdenNJ record 4
job orders for Daniel between 1775 and October 14, 1781. (Fulling
mills process newly woven woolen cloth to soften it.) We have no
information on Daniel's wife, except that her name was Mary Reeder.
Daniel next appears in the 1789 tax records of BethelTownship,
BedfordCountyPA. (In 1850, BedfordCounty was split to form
Bedford and FultonCounties, with BethelTownship presently located
in FultonCounty.) Peter Minney appears in the 1789 BethelTownship
tax records.
The "Widow Minney" appears in the BethelTownship tax records from
1791 to 1797, leading to the conclusion that Daniel died in 1790. By
1798, Mary had married Joseph Fawney, and he became the administrator
of Daniel Minney's estate.
Peter Minney's will is recorded in the 1795 BedfordCountyPA
records and reads as follows:
" In the Name of God Amen. I Peter Minney of BethelTownship,
BedfordCounty and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, yoeman, beiing
very Sick and weak of Body, yet of sound and perfect Understanding and
Memory. do constitute this my Last Will and Testamenta and desire it
may be received by all as such; First I most humbly bequeath my soul
to Almighty God my maker, besseching his most gracious Acceptance of
it, through the all sufficient merits and mediation of my most
compassionate Redeemer Jesus Christ, who gave himself to be an
atonement for my sins, and is able to save the uttermost, all that
come unto God by him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for
them and who I trust will not reject me a returning repentant Sinner,
when I come to him for Mercy; in this hope and Confirdence i render
upe my Soul with comfort, humbly besseching the most blessed and
glorious Family. the three one God most holy most merciful and
gracious, to prepair me for the Time of my Destitution; and then to
take me to himself into the Place and rest and incomparable Felicity
which he has prepaired for all that love and fear his holy Name, Amen.
Blessed be God.
I Give my body to the Earth, from whence it was taken, in full
assurance of Resurrection fronm thence at the Last Day. as for my
burial, I desire it may be decent and without pomp or grandeur at the
Discretion of my Esecutors hereafter named who, I doubt not will
manage it with all requistite prudence. As to my Worldly Estate where
with it hast pleased God to bless me with in this Life, I will and
positively order that all my debts be parid, First I give and bequeath
my Brother Daniel Minneys children my Nephews and Nieces Namely
Matthew Minney, Phebe Minney, John Minney, Daniel Minney and Rachel
Minney all my Worldly Estate to be divided amongst them as they come
of Age' I will and order that my goods be sold ast Publick Vandace and
the money thence arising with the money not outstanding to be put to
Interest until those under age come of Age, if any one or more of them
should decease before they arive to age of Maturity their share or
Shares to be equally divided amongst the surviving ones, and Lastly, I
do hereby Constitute and appoint Joseph Waarford and Thomas Moore
Executors of this my Last will and Testament and Trustees of the
Children above named. In Witness where of I have here unto set my
Hand and Seal this seventh Day of May in the year of our Lord one
thousand seven Hundred and Ninety five."

Daniel Minney II, a son of Daniel and Mary (Reeder) Minney, was
born in 1784, probably in LebanonTownship, HunterdonCounty, New
Jersey. The "Widow Minney" (Mary, Daniel II's mother) appeared on the
BethelTownship, BedfordCountyPA tax records from 1791 to 1797.
Daniel married Phebe Maison. Phoebe was born in PA about 1780.
Traces of the family have not been found until Daniel II appears
on the Whitely Township, GreeneCountyPA tax records in 1818. Daniel
Minney appears regularly in the GreeneCounty records from 1818 until
1832. On October 29, 1831, Daniel and Phebe sold 209 acres of land in
three different parcels. There is a confusing entry in the Greene
County tax records for 1832, and Daniel appears no more.
On June 20, 1833, Daniel bought 110 acres of land in Monongalia
CountyVA, on Booths Creek. MonongaliaCounty court house burned in
1850 and no records earlier than 1851 are available. Daniel and Phebe
appear in the July 17, 1850Doddridge County, VA (WV) census.
Daniel's age is 66 and his birthplace New Jersey, and Phebe is listed
as 70 and born in PA.

Jonathan S. Minney, a son of Daniel and Phebe (Maison) Minney,
was born in GreeneCountyPAAugust 14, 1814 and died in GilmerCounty
WV August 9, 1891. He married Rebecca Ann Walls in MonongaliaCounty
VA (WV) April 20, 1837. Rebecca, a daughter of William and Catherine
(Morgan) Walls, was born in Monongalia County January 16, 1819 and
died in GilmerCountyWV in 1915. The family moved from Monongalia
County to Harrison County VA (WV) in 1840 and lived there until moving
to CalhounCountyVA (WV) in 1853. They later moved to GilmerCounty
WV, where they both died.

Daniel Minney, a son of Daniel and Phebe (Maison) Minney, was
born about 1815. He married Mary Mitchel in Marion County, VA (WV)
December 20, 1845. Mary was born in VA about 1831. On November 4,
1848, Daniel Minney of Doddridge County, VA, bought 235 acres of land
on the Little Kanawha River in Gilmer County, VA (WV) from Patrick
Rafferty. (Deed Book 1, p.283, Gilmer County, WV.) The family moved
from DoddridgeCounty in time to be enumerated in the September 4,
1850 GilmerCounty census. Daniel was still living there June 12,
1852, when he executed a trust deed to Patrick Rafferty on 75 acres of
land. By October 8, 1858, the family had probably left the area. On
that date, the GilmerCounty clerk executed a deed granting Daniel's
235 acres of land to John P. Fell, for 1853 delinquent taxes of 57
cents plus interest, for a total of 79 cents. (Gilmer County Court
Deed Book 3, p.448.) Fern Minney's book says that the family moved to
Pine Creek in CalhounCounty, where Mary is buried on the Emory Ball
farm.

in Gilmer County WV March 3, 1923. He married Mary Shock in Calhoun
CountyVA (WV) Jul 7, 1861. Mary, a daughter Robert and Margaret
(Stump) Shock, was born in Gilmer County VA (WV) July 7, 1845 and died
there August 18, 1940.

William and Barbara Ellen (Oats) McElwee, was born in VA October 18,
1852 and died December 16, 1946.

"Ves" Minney was born February 15, 1855 in CalhounCountyVA
(WV). In 1865, his parents, Jonathan S. Minney and Rebecca Ann (Walls)
Minney bought 52 acres of land on Snake Root Run near Stumptown,
CalhounCounty. "Ves" grew to manhood on this small farm. Before his
marriage, "Ves" taught a subscription school, but after his marriage
he farmed full time. On December 31, 1879, "Ves" married Anetta
Rogers, daughter of John Addison and Francena (Sands) Rogers. Anetta
was born and raised on Crooked Fork of Steer Creek, GilmerCounty, on
what is known in 1985 as "The Earn Boggs place." John Addison Rogers
is buried in a lone grave on a high point above the Earn Boggs house
and Francena is buried in a lost grave at the Rosedale Methodist
Church cemetery.
The "Ves" Minney family lived for a several years at "The Tom
Frame Farm" on Cub Fork of Crooked Fork. Oe Minney told her son, Bly
Miller, that she was born on that farm. Sometime after Oe was born
they moved to a farm on Steer Creek between Stumptown and Shock--a
farm owned by Scott Hardman in 1985. They moved from there to the
Ellsworth Perkins farm on the ridge at the head of Laurel Fork of
Steer Creek in 1893. This farm was owned by Henry Bailey in 1977, at
the time this manuscript was written. The family remained there until
1900, when they bought 58 acres of land on Laurel Fork of Steer Creek
from C.N. and Ella Snodgrass. (Deed dated May 10, 1900)
A thorn ran through "Ves'" left ear lobe causing a wound that
never healed. He died February 12, 1910, (Tradition says that the
thorn wound became "cancerous"), and was buried by his request on
a point near the RosedaleBaptistChurch, "so that he could always
hear the church bell ring". Others were buried near him and land for
a cemetery was donated by T.V. Shock, thus beginning the Rosedale
BaptistCemetery. The trustees of the church at that time demanded
that all graves be kept in the same row, burying people by "first to
die" rather than by family group. When Anetta died December 21, 1934,
the cemetery fence was moved so that she could be buried beside her
husband.
Both "Ves" and Anetta were members of the Crooked Fork Baptist
Church. (Anetta was baptized December 2, 1877.) Both received
letters on December 2 1899 and joined the RosedaleBaptistChurch
October 20, 1900.
"Ves" and Anetta were the parents of nine children, five sons and
four daughters. All nine children settled and raised their families
within GilmerCountyWV.
