‘Derwent Hilly 10’ Race Report

In spite of heavy rain and a strong wind, 32 competitors braved the conditions to take part in the 'Derwent Hilly 10' Road Race. Most of the runners came from North and West Cumbria. This was the second event in the 2006 Derwent AC Summer Grand Prix, over what is arguably one of the hilliest 10 Kilometre road running courses in Cumbria (approximately 6.24 Miles).

In the Senior Men's category, Whitehaven-based Paul Curtis from Blengdale AC posted a good time of 36:31 despite the poor conditions. There was a good race for second place, eventually won by Dick Gorst (Kendal AC) in 36:49 ahead of Mike Cunnigham of Borrowdale Fell Runners (37:19). First Veteran Over 40 was Ian Royston from Egremont in Fourth place overall (39:02). Second Veteran was Alan Marshall of Eden Runners (40:15), ahead of Tony Davis of Derwent AC (40:46). Tony's club colleague Peter Daley won the Super Veteran (Over 50) Category for the second time in the Grand Prix, giving him an excellent chance of winning his category in the Grand Prix. First Over 60 was the ever-present Geoff Harrington ofCumberland AC, running as well as ever in a respectable time of 60:46. First Junior was Bobby Hagan of CFR (40:28).

The Ladies Category was won by Karen Heaviside from Pooley Bridge (Eden Runners) in a time of 40:03. Gay Eastoe from Egremont, competing for Blengdale AC, finished Second Lady (49:49) ahead of Jane Mottram of CFR, Third in 51:04 and Vicky Daley of Cockermouth in Fourth (52:41). Fifth Lady was Susan Hammond (Eden Runners) in 62:01 with Lucy Block from Carlisle in Sixth place (65:24). All these Ladies ran excellent races in difficult conditions.

The Marshals around the course and the timekeepers did a sterling job in the wet conditions. Thanks to everyone who took part or helped in any way. The next event in the Derwent AC Grand Prix Series is the ‘Hay-O’ Trail Race on Tuesday 4 July 20065 starting at 7.00pm.
