Step / Emergency Response Notification Procedures
1 / Injury! For an emergency involving an injury, move the victim to safety if possible and contact emergency responders by dialing 911. Initiate first aid measures per anhydrous ammonia MSDS.
2 / Evacuation! For a release requiring an evacuation of the surrounding area, contact emergency responders by dialing 911.
Step / Operational Procedures
Caution: conduct the following only if safe to do so using normal PPE of non-vented goggles and lined rubber gloves. / Consequence of Deviation
3 / Shut off Pump! Shut off pump by:
- Depressing stop button located on the nurse tank riser, or
- Turn off power to pump by switching off the main disconnect located in the electrical box, or
- Call the power company to disconnect power to the whole facility.
4 / Piping/Hose Release! Shut off the supply of ammonia by:
- Closing the emergency shut off valves at the pump, nurse tank riser or truck manifold by pulling the actuation cables,
- Closing the orange liquid supply valves under the belly of the storage tanks,
- Close the yellow vapor supply valve under the belly of the storage tanks,
- Close all load-out riser valves and any nurse tank fill valves that may be open, and
- Close all transport and truck manifold valves that may be open.
5 / Pressure Relief Valve Release! Reduce the supply of ammonia by transferring product from the storage tank to nurse tanks or transports / Failure to reduce supply of ammonia may result in significant loss of product.
6 / Storage Tank Leak! Reduce the supply of ammonia by transferring ammonia from the storage tank to nurse tanks or transports. / Failure to reduce supply of ammonia may release entire contents of storage tank.
7 / Contact Plant Management! Contact plant management as soon as possible.
Step / Reporting Procedures
8 / Report Release! If release greater than 100 lbs (19 gallons) occurred, notify National Response Center (NRC) at 1-800-424-8802 and the LEPC within 15 minutes of discovery. If release results in a fatality or in-patient hospitalization of three or more employees, notify OSHA at 1-800-321-6742within 8 hours per 29 CFR, Part 1904.39(a). / Failure to report a release or fatality in a timely manner may result in hefty fines.
