5. TITLE OF THE TOPIC :

“STATUS OF SMRITI IN DIFFERENT PRAKRUTHI”

6. BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK

6.1 NEED FOR STUDY:

Memory plays a very crucial role in the existence of an individual.Remembering and forgetting are the two facets of the same coin and both are equally important in learning. The process of retaining and reproducing what has been learnt is known as remembering. The power of the mind to retain and reproduce is called memory. The efficiency of memoryvaries considerably between people and during the life time of an individual.

According to the classics, recollecting the things which are observed, heard and experienced is called Smriti1.The Ayurvedic texts have mentioned different grades of Smritiin different Prakrutisuch as Alpa Smriti in Vata Prakriti and Smrutitmanin Kapha prakriti.

Prakruthiis the innate constitution of an individual based on his Dosha predominance determined at the time of conception which cannot be changedfrom birth till the death2.

Therefore an effort will be done to assess the variation of memory in different Prakruthis andto quantify the degree of variation in Smriti in each Prakruthi.

6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

Smriti is a sort of perception from his imprints of his previous experience.Smriti is said to be an attribute of Atma3. According to Acharya Charaka,it is one among the proof of the existence of the absolute soul including desire, hatred, happiness, misery, effort, conscious, stability, intellect, memory and ego. Smriti is nothing but the remembrance of things directly perceived, heard or experienced earlier4. Usually memory contains everything memorable.

According to Acharya Susrutha it is one among the Shodasa kala – the qualities of living person.5According to Sir Monnier Williams Smriti refers to remember, recollect, bear in mind ,call to mind ,the action remembered is expressed.6

According to Tarka sangraha, it is the knowledge acquired after the creation of proper samskara. Almost all activities and interactions of a person will make certain perception in him then later he quits those perceptions as time passes. But a bit of all these experiences with certain marks imprinted upon him produces Samskaras. The circumstantial knowledge from ones own Samskara is known as Smriti.

According to Amarakosha, Smruti, Chitta and Aadhyanam are the words used for remembrance.7

Ayurveda lays great emphasis on the examination of the Prakruthi which is the natural state of an individual. This is very important because only by understanding the original state of the body function one can understand the possible derangement in the functioning. The primary aim of Ayurveda is to maintain health in healthy person and hence knowledge of Prakruthi is imperative. Depending on the Dosa that is predominant in the sukra and sonita at the time of union , the food and activities of the pregnant women ,uterus and season determine the Prakruthi which is of seven types.8

With respect to smriti in different Prakruthis, Acharyas have mentioned different variations,as per Charaka in Vata Prakruthi they are Alpa Smruta and Sruta Grahi9and as per Vagbhata they have Chala Smriti10. As per Susrutha and Vagbhata in Pitta prakruthi individuals are Medhavi11. In Kapha prakruthi individuals, as per Acharya Susruta they are Chiragrahi12and according to Vagbhata they are Smrutiman13.

According to Sarangadhara Balyam ,Vrdhi, Chavi, Medha, Twak, Drusti, Sukra, Buddhi, Karmeindriya, spiritual life-these get deteriorated in successive decades. In commentary it is mentioned that Medha gets hampered after 40yrs.14
