Learning Objectives:

After completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss the importance of injuries and violence in terms of being major public health problems in societies.
  2. In terms of epidemiology, identify the nature and magnitude of injuries and violence across the lifespan, with a particular emphasis on children and adolescents.
  3. Critique policies for injury and violence prevention and the effectiveness of intervention strategies.
  4. Describe the roles of laws and public health agencies in injury and violence prevention efforts.
  5. Utilize the Haddon Matrix, socioecological models, violence prevention models, etc to plan a range of prevention options that encompass public health ethics.
  6. Discuss the importance of the integration of injury and violence prevention efforts that allow for collaboration and greater intervention success.
  7. Utilize research methods to provide an in-depth analysis of an injury/violence issue with guidelines for an integrative intervention.

Assessment strategies for this course include the following:
  1. Reading Assignment Quizzes (4@10 points each)
  2. Integrative Intervention Project (100 points)
  3. Project Presentation (50 points)
  4. Classroom Participation (10 points)
  1. Reading Assignment Quizzes: This course will include four reading assignment quizzes that will include course readings and discussion information. These will be given at the start of the respective classes.
  2. Integrative Intervention Project: This project will be 15-18 typed pages (double-spaced) in Word (at least Font size 11) with 1-2 additional pages for references. APA (6th edition) must be used for the reference format. The project must cover the following areas and use these sections: Injury/Violence topic (with demonstration of need and shared risk and resiliency factors for violence and unintentional injury); Comprehensive review of the literature inclusive of gaps in understanding and prevention strategies; and Development of comprehensive integrative intervention strategies. Papers will be submitted on Canvas and Turn-It-In will used. Papers are due at the start of class on the last class session.
  3. Project Presentation: Intervention Projects will be presented to the class utilizing Power Point. Each presentation will last no longer than 10-12 minutes (about 20-25 slides). Slides should cover each of the sections in #2. More information on the presentation will be provided in class.
  4. Students are expected to read all assignments, do individual searching of injury topics and relevance, stay up-to-date with the latest literature and information, and participate actively in class. Participation needs to be meaningful and pertinent to class topics.
Grading Policies:
There will be no plus/minus grades in the course. The grading scale is found below. There will be no makeups on reading quizzes unless students show a verified illness or emergency. Three points will be deducted for each day the research project or presentation is late.
