Hospital productivity report shows how NHS can make large savings – Lord Carter says hospitals could save billions of pounds by better use of staff, medicines, supplies and more efficient processes. His report finds that the NHS could save up to £5 billion every year by 2020 by making better use of staff, using medicines more effectively and getting better value from the huge number of products it buys. New programmes to protect against meningitis and septicaemia – MenB and MenACWY vaccination programmes launched this summer will protect babies and young people against the meningococcal bacterium. Commissioners take centre stage – The Five Year Forward View and its ambitions for delivering integrated and new models of care are the focus of the Commissioning Show 2015. Just Beat It! Tackling diabetes in County Durham – As part of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme launched in March – the first at-scale national evidence-based programme to stop people developing Type 2 diabetes – seven areas of the country began testing different approaches to tackling the issue. Dementia Assessment and Referral, April 2015 – This data collection reports on the number and proportion of patients aged 75 and over admitted as an emergency for more than 72 hours who have been identified as potentially having dementia, who are appropriately assessed and, where appropriate, referred on to specialist services in England. Heatwave conditions forecast – The Met Office has forecast potential heatwave conditions for all parts of England except the north east, and has declared a Level 2 Heat-health alert. This warning is triggered when the Met Office forecasts that there is a 60% or greater chance of temperatures being high enough on at least 2 consecutive days and the intervening night to have a significant effect on health. End of life care improving according to report – The ‘What We Know Now 2014’ report suggests a growing understanding within the health sector of what is important to people at the end of life. New STI figures show rapid increases among gay men – Latest figures published today on 23 June 2015 from Public Health England (PHE) show there were 439,243 sexually transmitted infections (STIs) reported in England in 2014. The impact of STIs remains greatest in young people under the age of 25 years and gay men (gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men).
