Abstract

During this lecture we will review some modeling theories of the composite materials made of mixture materials. We will show the failure of the general mixture theories and explain the general effective medium equation (GEM). This is almost certainly because the GEM equation is the only equation that can model the rapid changes in the dielectric constants and conductivity that occur at and near the percolation threshold of the conducting particles in the dielectric matrix. Two parameters of the GEM equation, vc or c(the percolation threshold) and t (an exponent) give some insight into the microstructures and the connectivity of the dispersed conducting particles.

Five different classes of composite materials, including carbon-resin mixtures (with various types of carbon ) and a conducting polymer ( in both air and water ) have been analyzed. The GEM equation gives the best quantitative fits of the experimental data for these composite materials and for many others complex dielectric mixture using conducting particles..

In a second part, the lecture will present some of the electromagnetic measurement techniques used to characterize composite materials and to deduce the complex permittivity or permeability of these materials. Some applications of such materials will be given.
