LETTER/EMAIL ENQUIRY TO UNIVERSITIES

If you have not achieved the grades necessary to gain an unconditional offer on your chosen course at a Scottish University, or if you intend applying to an English university, you should check that the subjects you intend to take in Sixth Year are acceptable. This means that you must communicate with the admissions staff at all of the universities where you intend to apply – do not assume that the answer given by one of the institutions will be the view of the others, e.g. some will prefer additional Highers, other post-Higher courses and opinions on re-takes and upgrades vary. You should write or email rather than telephone with these enquiries for two reasons:-

1.  Admissions Officers are dealing with urgent clearing decisions at this time.

2.  A written enquiry receives a written reply, which carries more authority.

You should make the contact yourself – enquiries from potential students always impress admissions staff more than a contact from parents or teachers on your behalf. Personal contact from the candidate shows more initiative, interest and commitment.

Send off your enquiries without delay.

THE FORM OF THE LETTER/EMAIL

Presentation:

This is a formal enquiry. If you are sending a letter, use white unlined A4 paper. Set it out as a business letter with neat margins, either carefully hand written (no changes!) or word processed.

Check spelling and grammar.
