ANNEXURE-I

NEED FOR THE STUDY,

·  Dermatoglyphics- scientific study of epidermal ridge patterns and it’s configuration on Palmar & plantar aspects of finger tips, palm, sole & toes.

·  The term ‘ dermatoglyphic,’ was coined by Cummins & Midlo.

·  Since an ancient era one or the other way the dermatoglyphics remains the subject of interest to various palmists, philosophers and scientists.

·  It is a growing discipline & applicability may renders it as a useful tool to the clinician.

·  Diabetes mellitus is silent killer of mankind & serious health problem.

·  Most of the sufferers are asymptomatic & hence it’s early prediction and diagnosis is problem.

·  If untreated, it leads to a number of complications.

·  Dermatoglyphics can be effectively employed as a screening procedure which may helps in the early prediction of the cases of diabetes mellitus.

Review of Literature

Dermal ridges are formed early in fetal development. The resulting ridge configuration are genetically determined and are modified by environment factors, ridges develop in relation to volar pads. The volar pads are noticed at about the 6th week of gestation and reach maximal size by the 12th to the 13th week of Intrauterine life.

Fetal volar pads are mound shaped elevations of mesenchymal tissue which are situated above the distal end of the Metacarpal bones, in each inter digital area, in the thenar and hypothenar areas of the palm.

( Miller, J.R.1966 )55 In the opinion of Penrose and Ohara ( 1973 )67 the process of ridge formation takes place from the 2nd to the 5th month of fetal life, while Blanka Schuawann and Milton Alter ( 1976 ) considered this period from 3rd month to the 6th prenatal month.

The volar pads are much studied by Bonnevie in 1925. He felt that the presence of volar pads is responsible for the development of the finger print, patterns the view which is still widely accepted Perose and Ohara (1973)67 have studied the stages in normal development of ridge formation by series of light microscopic sections. For light microscopy the section should be 2 micros in thickness and stained with 1 % toludine blue in a 1% solution of borax in water.

Verbow (1973)93 in his study on dermatoglyphics in early onset diabetis mellitus in 80 patients ( 42 females and 38 males ) and 158 normal controls ( 82 females and 76 males ) found that female diabetes showed a decrease frequency of finger whorls and increased frequency of arches.

ANNEXURE-III

Objective of the Study

·  To Study the Palmar Dermatoglyphic pattern in the patients of Diabetes Mellitus.

·  To Compare the dermatoglyphic pattern of study group with control group.

·  To compare our present findings with previous workers.

·  To find out, whether the specific dermatoglyphic trait exist in the patients of Diabetes mellitus and whether it is significant.

ANNEXURE-IV

Materials & Methods

·  Black duplicating ink

·  Stamp pad

·  Printing cards

·  Roller

·  Magnifying hand lens

·  Cotton wool

·  Protractor

·  Both quantitative and qualitative parameters will be analyzed in study group of 100 subjects and compared with data from control group of 100 subjects.

·  Modified Purvis- Smith Ink method will be used for obtaining the prints.

·  Statistical analysis will be done using student’s unpaired ‘t’ test and chi-square test.

Conclusion

·  These parameters can be used as dermatoglyphic markers for scientific screening of the population prone to develop Diabetes mellitus.

·  The relevance of dermatoglyphic is not to diagnose, but to prevent the disease by predicting it.
