Job Title: Cleaner

JOB PURPOSE

To help keep the school clean and tidy so that it is a safe and pleasant place for pupils and students to learn and for staff to work in.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To work as part of the Site Management team to maintain the cleanliness of the school site. Although responsible to the Site Manager you will work under the direction of the duty Caretaker. The duties will include:

1.  Empting and washing out dustbins and waste containers.

2.  Dusting.

3.  Polishing or wiping available surfaces (tables, desks, shelves, work surfaces etc).

4.  Moving furniture so that the floors can be cleaned.

5.  Vacuuming floors and material furniture.

6.  Sweeping, scrubbing, buffing, polishing or mopping floors as appropriate.

7.  Removing chewing gum and graffiti.

8.  Wiping or washing walls, lockers, window ledges, shirting boards, radiators and pipework and furniture etc, as required.

9.  Straightening the furniture, closing windows, watering plants and leaving the rooms looking tidy.

10.  Cleaning showers, sinks and washbasins and the surrounding areas.

11.  Cleaning toilets and urinals.

12.  Replenish hand towels and toilet rolls as required.

13.  Removing swarf from the machines in metal workrooms.

14.  Keeping the cleaners cupboards tidy.

15.  Looking after the equipment and reporting any faults to the Caretaking Staff.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

16.  Ensuring that toilet areas, toilets and sinks are cleaned using the red colour coded equipment. The food preparation areas are cleaned with the blue colour coded equipment and all other areas are cleaned with the yellow equipment.

17.  Ensuring that chemicals are handled, used and stored correctly (follow COSHH assessment forms).

18.  Ensuring that all the health and safety instructions are followed.

19.  Respect confidentiality. Ensure the arrangements that keep people, information, equipment and buildings safe and secure are followed.

20.  Attend Safeguarding training and report any concerns that arise.

21.  Attend training as required.

DECISIONS MADE

The majority of decisions expected of this post are taken within established procedures, practices and routines. The postholder is expected to deal with variations from the accepted pattern, missing documentation or other unusual aspects and, if appropriate, bring the matter to the attention of the staff.

This job description sets out the major duties associated with cleaning at Northgate High School. It is assumed that other duties of a similar level/nature are not excluded because they are not itemised. The duties of this post could vary from time to time as a result of new legislation, changes in technology or policy changes. Appropriate training may be given to help the postholder undertake this new/varied work.

WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

The post is for 10 or 20 hours a week for 44 weeks a year (Term time, training days and 5 weeks during the day in the school holidays). The actual timing of the hours may vary depending on school needs.

Staff are needed to work Monday to Friday during term time and on staff training days plus 5 weeks on designated days during the school holidays. This amounts to 44 weeks a year.
