During this round of negotiations further progress was made on reaching a reciprocal agreement on the rights of UK citizens in the EU and EU citizens in the UK. A joint technical note comparing the UK and the EU’s positions on citizens' rights, published yesterday, can be read onlinehere.

Publication of future partnership and position papers

The Government published a paper on our future customs arrangements with the EU during the week commencing 14 August. It was the first future partnership paper we have released. We also published a position paper on Northern Ireland and Ireland during the same week.

During the week commencing 21 August we published a further set of papers on the new deep and special partnership the UK wants to build with the EU. We also published two more position papers ahead of the August round of negotiations beginning earlier this week.

Whereas the position papers are about separation issues currently being discussed in the negotiations, the future partnership papers are focused on different elements of building the new relationship to promote our shared interests and values.

The latest papers to be released were:

Future customs arrangements - a future partnership paper
(Published Tuesday 15 August)
Northern Ireland and Ireland - a position paper
