Career Center Notes for August 24, 2007

* This is our first set of notes for the new academic year. We have a new look to our Career Center website and it is easier than ever to connect to your Family Connection account. If you have friends who have not yet activated their Family Connection account, please tell them to stop by the Career Center or to give us a call at 301-649-2819. Every Blair student should have access to the information we send out every Friday concerning jobs, internships, scholarships, and college visits in the Career Center. *Check out the growing list of colleges that will be coming to visit Blair this fall. Go to your Family Connection website and click on “Visit Schedule”. This list is being updated every time the phone rings!

*ACT and SAT registration deadlines: If you are interested in signing up for the Oct. 6th SAT Reasoning or Subject tests, the last day for regular registration is Sept. 10th. Go to The last day to sign up during the late period for the Sept. 16th ACT test is August 24th. Go to If you need a fee waiver for either of these tests, stop by the Career Center.

*National Museum of Women in the Arts Teen Programs: Four monthly workshops are planned this fall for teenagers. All programs are free but reservations are required. The museum is located at 1250 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005. For more info, email or call 202-783-7370.

*Skillful Parenting is a local organization that supports parents as they try to become more effective in working with their children. Individual and group instruction sessions are offered to parents of newborns/young children/ teenagers, grandparents, caretakers, and foster parents. *Help for Disorganized Students and their Frustrated Parents: Thinking Organized for Parents and Children: Helping Kids Get Organized for Home, School & Play by Rhona M. Gordon is a great resource to help parents work with their kids to improve organizational skills. It offers a step-by-step guide to give kids the tools to independently manage their personal and academic obligations. The book costs $14.95; to purchase a copy, call 301-986-1503. *The Gordon and Marilyn Macklin Business Institute (MBI) at Montgomery College is expanding to a two-year honors program. This program at the Rockville campus provides a wide range of innovative, high-quality business education opportunities. Accepted students receive a two-year full-tuition scholarship and a laptop for their time at Montgomery College. JOBS

*This is a great time for teenagers to be looking for work! College students are returning to their campuses and employers have vacancies to fill. Many of the local businesses in downtown Silver Spring hire Blair students. Students who need work permits should stop by the Career Center. (You will need a work permit after you have been offered a job and if you are not yet 18 years old.)

*Part-time job at Four Corners: The Insurance Benefits and Advisors company needs a part-time office assistant to work about 10 hours per week. Students on the honor roll are encouraged to apply. Hours are flexible and the pay is $6 per hour. Duties will include filing, telephone calls and general office assistance. For more info, contact Michele St. John at 301-681-9645. SCHOLARSHIPS

*Posse Foundation scholarships are available for seniors applying to Bucknell University, Grinnell College, Lafayette College and Sewanee: The University of the South. Each winner will receive a four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarship worth over $100,000. Blair can submit 10 names for consideration. Candidates should be top academic students who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership within their high school, community or family. These scholarships are open to students of all backgrounds and are not based on need. If you are interested in being nominated, please contact the Career Center before Sept. 7th. *Washington University in St. Louis Danforth Scholars Program: Winners receive full- or partial- scholarships; they are renewable for four years. Blair can nominate multiple students for consideration. Criteria include outstanding academic performance, commitment to community service, and high moral character. *Davidson College: The Bryan Scholars and Davidson Scholars Programs award students from $2,000 to $30,000 annually. The top awards are given to one man and one woman. Blair can nominate up to three students who are scholar/athletes and are planning on participating in one of the designated varsity sports at Davidson. Interested students should contact the Career Center before Sept. 14th.

*Horatio Alger Association Scholarships: Applicants should be seniors, US citizens or permanent residents, have a 2.0 GPA, and demonstrated financial need. Awards range from $2,500 to $20,000 and are renewable. The deadline to apply is Oct. 30th. For more info, go to

COLLEGE TOUR

*Two upcoming tours are being sponsored by the Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church:

*Fall 2007 College and Culture Tour: This will take place from Oct. 16-18, 2007. Visits include Howard, Morgan State, Towson, Delaware State and Cheyney. In addition, participants will visit the historic Apollo Theater, see a production of “Stomp”, visit the State of Liberty and Ellis Island, and dine at Sylvia’s in Harlem. *2008 Historically Black College Tour: This will take place from March 16 – 19, 2008. Tour stops include Clark-Atlanta, Morehouse, North Carolina A & T, Bennett, Johnson C.
