Dental Nurse (Chair-side assistance)

Plus Dental Nurse Triage / reception/administrative cover as required

Accountable to: Director of Clinical Service & Quality

Responsibility to: Urgent Care Manager/ Dental Clinical Lead

Hours: Various - Morning/ afternoon/ evening shifts available on weekdays plus at weekends and Bank holidays

Pay: Hourly rate: £11.66, Salaried position

JOB SUMMARY:

To provide chair side assistance to the dental practitioner/other dental care professional plus reception duties as required.

The post holder will work under the direction of any dental practitioner/other dental care professional in respect of chair side assistance provided.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical

·  Receive patients and their carers, answer questions on treatments and provide reassurance to nervous patients to enable them to accept treatment.

·  Be responsible for setting up and closing of dental surgery, ensuring cleaning and decontamination process are consistent with Local Care Direct Infection Control and decontamination policies. This will include any routine daily tests of equipment and maintaining high standards of health and safety in relation to hazardous substances plus moving and handling.

·  Assist the dentist or other dental care professional at the chair side with simple and complex procedures and provide physical assistance to the patient during dental treatment.

·  Essential good communication skills and confident telephone manner.

·  Booking patients into appointments following a dental nurse triage protocol.

·  Deal confidently with service users with any disability or dental phobia.

·  Carry out clinical washing, disinfecting and decontamination procedures, select and prepare appropriate instruments for treatments maintaining high standards of infection control throughout.

·  Ensure routine servicing of equipment plus reporting and organising of necessary repairs as required.

·  Supervise patients until they are fit to leave the premises.

2.  Reception/Administration

·  To undertake reception or other administrative duties when requested. This might be as part of regular rota arrangements.

·  Handle cash and cheque payments for dental charges, dental sundries and cash up at the end of the session.

·  Deal with all patient paperwork appropriately, including the completion of forms FP17.

·  Take responsibility for elements of the stock control system plus ordering of dental materials and other stock as required.

·  Maintain the patient diary appropriately, together with the clinical record system plus accurate recording of patient/treatment statistics.

Note: where there is an agreed contingency need for a dental nurse to cover a receptionist shift, e.g. to cover potential short notice absence, this will be paid at the Dental Nurse rate.

3.  Quality

·  Adhere to service protocols and Local Care Direct policies at all times

·  Provide a safe and effective service.

·  Work with the team to improve performance and quality.

·  Participate in the organisation’s clinical governance and performance review procedures.
