  1. What does our Mathematics Vertical Team want to accomplish:
  2. For students? Increase confidence and participation in mathematics and improve standardized test scores.
  3. For other math teachers? Increase communication and teamwork at all levels of math.
  4. For ourselves? Increase participation in higher-level math courses, culminating in AP Calculus.
  1. What are the major issues that we, as a Math Vertical Team will address?
  2. Lack of continuity in math concepts between the levels.
  3. Focus on vocabulary modification amongst the different levels.
  1. THREE Specific goals for our Vertical Math Team this year are:
  2. Establish communication between Denham Springs Freshman High and DenhamSpringsHigh School math teachers.
  3. Identify 9th grade honor students that qualify for placement in both Algebra II-Honors and Geometry-Honors their tenth grade year.
  4. Communicate understanding of the Comprehensive Curriculum and its implementation.
  1. What specific plans do we have for accomplishing each of the goals listed above?
  2. Conduct a joint math faculty meeting with Denham Springs Freshman High and DenhamSpringsHigh School, including administrators and guidance counselors.
  3. Analyze 9th grade student data to identify potential students for an accelerated math curriculum and recommend student placement to counselors.
  4. Conduct a school-level math faculty meeting to provide resources to be used with the Comprehensive Curriculum.
  5. Plan future meetings for distribution of information.
  1. How will we measure our degree of success in attaining each of these goals?
  2. Participation of at least two math teachers at Denham Springs Freshman High on the vertical team.
  3. Increase enrollment in honors courses by at least 20 students by the end of the first year.
  4. Provide pre-tests to be used by the vertical team to identify student weaknesses.
  1. How often will our Math Vertical Team meet? Twice a semester
  1. When and where are we going to meet? September and November 2005; School library
  2. How long will each meeting be? 30-60 minutes
  1. How are we going to use the MVT Toolkit in our meetings? It will be used as a reference for implementation of vertical teaming.
  1. How are we going to keep a record of our activities and accomplishments?
  2. Maintain a portfolio of agendas, participants, and resources from the vertical team meetings.
  3. Keep files for each potential student identified for accelerated math courses in order to monitor their progress.
  1. Who is going to be responsible for maintaining and distributing the teamrecords/accomplishments to team members? Initially, DenhamSpringsHigh School vertical team members, Amy Flake and Emme Stansbury.
  1. How will we introduce the concept of Math Vertical Teams to the other mathteachers in our school? Provide examples of how calculus can be broken down into appropriate concepts at each level of math.
  1. What kind of administrative support will we request?
  2. Support in forming and maintaining a vertical team between the two campuses.
  3. Access to additional copies.
