TheMurrayRiverResnaggingExperiment
Demonstratingthebenefitsoflarge-scaleriverrestoration
Background
Widespreadremovalofstructuralwoodyhabitat(snags)intheMurrayRiverisrecognisedasamajordriverofdeclines inriverhealthandnativefishpopulations.Toalleviatethishistoricaldegradation,theMurray-DarlingBasinAuthority’s(MDBA)‘TheLivingMurray’(TLM)programundertookalarge-scalehabitatrestorationprojectofresnaggingtorestore4,450woodyhabitats(>1tonneeach)throughout194kmoftheMurrayRiverbetweenLakeHumeandLakeMulwala.Todate,thisprojectisthelargestrestoration(andsubsequentmonitoring)projectofitskindwithinAustralia.
