Band and Orchestra Policy
2015/2016 school year
Dear Band/Orchestra Member and Parents,
Welcome back to a year that promises to be better than ever. We have high expectations for you & know that you will live up to them. Last year was a year filled with wonderful musical experiences which were superior and we would like to continue to build upon that. For the new students entering the program, this will be a wonderful, new adventure for you. As a member of the Band and Orchestra there are certain criteria you must meet to stay in good standing. This is a year – long commitment in which you will earn academic credit and a grade. Your grade is based on the criteria listed below. This requires you to actively participate in this activity to insure your own success and that of the entire group. Please review this policy carefully.
1. Lessons are scheduled once a week. Students are required to attend all lessons, rehearsals (after-school) and performances. No more than three absences will be permitted from lessons or rehearsals per semester. Lessons are on a rotating basis and if you miss your lesson you can make it up during a designated lunch recess make-up period (Fridays-Lunch Recess Make-ups)
2. Concerts – This is the fun part! However, in order to play in a performance, students must be present for the last 2 dress rehearsals. Concerts, performances, and any clinic count as 50% of the academic grade.
3. All of the above criteria are required in order to attend the end of the Year Music trip.
Performing Ensembles & Rehearsal Dates:
Orchestra – 6th, 7th & 8th grade – Tuesday after school rehearsals
Concert Band- Wednesday after school rehearsals
Jazz Ensemble – All grades by Audition – Thursday after school rehearsals (Alto, Tenor & Bari Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Bass & Guitar)
Wind Ensemble – advanced band by audition – Friday after school rehearsal
DMS Back to School Night – September 17th
Winter & Spring Concerts:
December 16, 2015 – Winter Concert
Spring Concert - TBA
TBA - Graduation (8th grade band and orchestra)
Band & Orchestra Concert Dress: Black Pants & White Shirts
Band Notes: All students start off in Concert Band and are welcome to audition for Wind Ensemble (advanced band) or jazz Band. Audition dates for Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble will be announced during the homeroom announcements.
