A SUMMARY OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Board of Education was conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2015. The information listed below is a summary of what happened at the meeting:

Education Presentation

Delton Kellogg High School Principal Lucas Trierweiler provided information about how two new technology programs, “illuminate DnA” and “i-Ready,” will be helpful to staff members and students in their instructional programs.

Information and Discussion Items

Board of Education members received information about the:

·  resignation of preschool teacher Cindy Malachowski.

·  Delton Kellogg High School Student Council’s plans for the 2015 Homecoming activities during the week of October 5th.

·  different sports divisions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SAC).

·  plans for the fourth grade trips to Mackinac in May 2016.

Board members and the superintendent presented reports about various programs and activities as noted:

Board President Marsha Bassett thanked Steve Hook and Steve Scoville, and those who helped them, for their work on improving the ball fields; noted the work of the Thornapple Valley Church members on school facilities as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring; expressed appreciation for the dedication ceremony conducted for the new and renovated physical education and athletic facilities; and reviewed the activities of the Delton Kellogg Education Foundation, including plans for Homecoming Weekend and the availability of classroom grants.

Trustee Andy Stoneburner commented about the recent work of the Board’s Finance Committee, including plans for the annual audit of the financial records for the DK Schools, self-funding for chromebook repair and replacement, and the use of unallocated bond funds.

Board Treasurer Jim McManus summarized the most recent meeting of the Bond Steering Committee, explaining that the DK Schools will be receiving a credit due to furniture delivery set-up problems, and also reported about some transportation-related projects.

The superintendent noted the health problem of DKES volunteer Glenn Richardson and wished him well; explained that the hearing about the 2009, 2010 and 2011 state aid issues will be conducted the Michigan Department of Education on October 21, 2015; and reminded those present about the Special Election renewal millage election that will be on the ballot on November 3.

Consent Agenda

The Board approved the minutes of the regular Board meeting conducted on August 17, 2015 the closed session minutes of the August 17 meeting, and the August 2015 Financial Report (August bills for payment).

Action Items

Personnel

Board Trustees approved the personnel recommendations listed below.

·  Reassignment of Ted Ruser from school bus driver to sub transportation dispatcher.

·  Appointments of Jamie Simpson as part-time elementary school counselor and Andrea Kellogg as preschool coordinator.

·  Appointments of Cozette Cain, Tina Meinke, Jan Tamminga, and John Webb as school bus drivers, and Sharon Ryan as a substitute transportation dispatcher.

·  Appointment of Jill McCrae as concessions worker.

Curriculum Purchase Award

Trustees awarded the purchase of the “i-Ready” diagnostic assessment system from Curriculum Associates of North Billerica, MA for the two-year bid of $64,000.

DK High School and Academy Graduation Dates

The Board approved 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 as the graduation ceremony date for the DK Academy, and 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 as the graduation ceremony date for DK High School.

Future Meetings of the Board

Board members voted to go into a closed session for a negotiations planning discussion and announced October 19 as the date of the next regular monthly meeting.
