Deliver us from evil 1 WS212

“Deliver Us From Evil” Matt. 6:13

by Wesley Simons

Introduction

1. Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Luke 11:1 And it came to pass,

that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his

disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught

his disciples.

2.Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father

which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our

daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Amen.

3. We are to pray for God to deliver us from evil, but we ask, what

evil?

4. How can we pray for God to deliver us from evil, if we pursue that

which is evil?

5. Notice some of the evil things that God wants us to avoid!

I. An Evil Conscience.

1. Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance

of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our

bodies washed with pure water.

2. John 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own

conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto

the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the

midst.

3. Acts 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a

conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

4. Romans 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their

hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the

mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

5. 1 Timothy 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience

seared with a hot iron;

6. 1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now

save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer

of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus

Christ:

II. An Evil Heart Of Unbelief.

1. Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an

evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

2. Mark 9:24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said

with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

3. Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in

the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was

only evil continually.

4. 2 Chronicles 12:14 And he did evil, because he prepared not his

heart to seek the LORD.

5. Psalm 141:4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise

wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of

their dainties.

6. Jeremiah 7:24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but

walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and

went backward, and not forward.

7. Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders,

adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

III. Evil Speakings.

1. Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour,

and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

2. Titus 3:1-2 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and

powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 2 To

speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all

meekness unto all men.

3. Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in

vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name

in vain.

4. Proverbs 30:8-9 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me

neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9

Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be

poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

IV. Evil Companions.

1. 1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt

good manners. (KJV)

2. 1 Corinthians 15:33 33 Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts

good habits." (NKJV)

3. 1 Corinthians 15:33 33 Be not deceived: Evil companionships

corrupt good morals. (ASV)

4. Mark 14:54 54 And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace

of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself

at the fire.

V. All Appearance Of Evil

1. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

2. Hebrews 5:11-14 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard

to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time

ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again

which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become

such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one

that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a

babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even

those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern

both good and evil.

VI. Every Evil Work.

1. 2 Timothy 4:17-18 17 Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and

strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known,

and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the

mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil

work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be

glory for ever and ever. Amen.

2. 1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the

victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. Matthew 5:10-12 Blessed are they which are persecuted for

righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed

are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say

all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and

be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so

persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

VII. This Present Evil World.

1. Galatians 1:4 4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver

us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our

Father:

2. 2 Peter 3:8-14 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that

one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years

as one day.9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some

men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that

any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the

day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the

heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall

melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein

shall be burned up.11 Seeing then that all these things shall be

dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy

conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the

coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be

dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens

and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore,

beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may

be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

3. Isaiah 13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the

wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud

to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

4. John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the

world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds

were evil.

5. John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world,

but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

Conclusion

1. We must flee evil as did Joseph.

2. Genesis 39:12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with

me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

3. Please flee evil and obey God today.
