SPECIAL DRIVE DURING NIGHT BY DELHI TRAFFIC POLICE

Alarmed by the rampant & menacing traffic violations by commercial goods vehicles during night, the Delhi Traffic Police has launched a special drive bydeploying more than 1,000 traffic police personnel during night time from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM in order to discipline these vehicles since 10.07.2015. It is pertinent to mention that in the year 2014, 1629 fatal accidents were reported, 825 fatal accidents were reported during night, out of which 396 were cases of “hit & run”. In the year 2015 up to 15th July, 822 fatal accidents were reported, 410 fatal accidents were reported during night, out of which 181 were cases of “hit & run”. In most of these deaths on road during night, commercial vehicles were found to be apparently responsible.

During special drive, traffic staffalongwith local police and PCR vans is being deployed at 54checking points situated near border areas and on the major corridors of Delhi. Some of the important corridors identified for this drive are Delhi Gurgaon Road (NH-8), Mathura Road, GT Karnal Road, NH-24, Rohtak Road, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and MB Road. The staff has been adequately equipped with light bars, Alcometers, barricades, blinkers, fluorescent jackets & flashers. The drive is closely monitored by senior officers.

The prime focus is on educating the drivers about lane discipline by way of distributing pamphlets and guiding them by using P.A. System. The patrolling traffic gypsies, traffic motorcycles &Highway Patrol vans are also guiding the drivers moving on the corridors to stick to lane driving. Prosecution of incorrigible offenders is also being done as a last resort. Major violations on their part have been noticed as Lane violation, Over-speeding, Overtaking, No Entry, Defective/Unreadable number plate,High/Long Load & drunken driving etc.

During the drive, 14,215 challans have been issued, more than 900 vehicles have been seized and 40 cases u/s 279 IPC has been registered against the drivers so far. The efforts of the above exercise have started showing results on the ground.Most of the commercial vehicles entering Delhi have started adhering to the lane driving. Over-speeding and drunken driving has been curbed to a great extent. The Delhi Traffic Police will continue this drive to ensure discipline on roads during night time.
