Top Figure Skaters in the Area to Compete in Delaware
Figure Skaters from across the region will take part in Competition at the University of Delaware
(Dover, DE) Dec. 11, 2012 –Lutzes, flips and jumps will fill the Fred Rust Ice Arena next April as the University of Delaware and the Delaware Sports Commission play host to the Association of Philadelphia Area Figure Skating Clubs Competition. The event, which takes place April 6-7, 2013, will feature 23 member clubs from a 110-mile radius from center city Philadelphia. The clubs are made up of skaters ages 3 and up featuring a range of skills from basic to those who compete on a national level. "The APAFSC Figure Skating Competition is a wonderful way to encourage beginning skaters to compete and to motivate current skaters to improve their skating skills by performing in front of a panel of judges on a local level,” said Sandy Shacklady-White, Vice President of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club and President of APAFSC. “The competition is a great way for skaters to learn early in life about good sportsmanship skills that can be applied to life in general." The competition, which has been running for more than 30 years, was last held in Delaware in 2005. UD makes for a perfect location for the event, given its rich figure skating history, said David Arthur, executive director of the Delaware Sports Commission. Former Olympian’s Tara Lipinski, Kimmie Meissner, Johnny Weir, Tiffany Scott, Oksana Grischuk and Evgeny Platov have trained at the Fred Rust Ice Arena and the Gold Ice Arena. “The High Performance Figure Skating Center at UD is a world-class facility that has drawn world-class athletes,” Arthur said. “We’re proud to partner with UD to bring the APAFSC event to Newark and showcase this amazing venue.” Last year’s event was held in Ardmore at the Philadelphia Figure Skating Club & Humane Society. The host hotel is the Embassy Suites in Newark. Sponsorships are available.
The event is free and open to the public. Tentative hours for the event are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. April 6 to 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 7. Check www.dfsc.org<http://www.dfsc.org> closer to the event.
