CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE III

DEH 2804C Clinical Dental Hygiene III (7) (A.S.) (2 class hours per week and 16 clinical hours per week, plus 3 hours per week of lab; 1 hour credit/4 hours of clinic.) Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of DEH 2802C. This course is designed to provide ongoing clinical experiences for the dental hygiene student in total patient care. Emphasis is placed on incorporation of professional decision-making and increasing quality care. Expanded functions in dental hygiene will be included. Additional fee are required. (Fall)

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.  Describe the rationale and utilization for expanded functions in the State of Florida and demonstrate the expanded functions identified in the Florida statues.

2.  Discuss new technologies and services offered in the dental practice setting.

3.  Describe the TMJ examination.

4.  Discuss the utilization of nitrous oxide.

5.  Develop and deliver a table clinic that may be presented at the FDHA Annual Session or appropriate venue.

6.  Develop and present a care presentation on a completed patient that demonstrates competency in treatment planning and utilization of the dental hygiene process of care.

7.  Develop education tools that will be utilized during Community during the Spring semester.

8.  Discuss the importance of recognizing the differences in cultures and demonstrate respect for diversity.

9.  Discuss current relevant ethical issues in dentistry.

10.  Demonstrate accepted infection control standards, compliance with the State College of Florida HIPAA standards and recall procedures followed at the State College of Florida in caring for a patient having a medical emergency.

11.  Discuss and develop evidenced-based dental hygiene treatment planning of special needs patients.

12.  Describe the proper use and maintenance for the use of the air polisher.
