Dental Hygiene Clinic III Laboratory
DEH 2804L Clinical Dental Hygiene III Laboratory (0) (A.S.) This course is designed to provide ongoing clinical experiences for the dental hygiene student in total patient care. Emphasis is placed on incorporation of professional decision-making and increasing quality of care. Expanded functions and dental hygiene care for patients with special needs will be included.
Performance Standards:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate clinical competency in providing dental hygiene services through knowledge, technical skill and behavior including:
a. Medical/dental histories including vital signs
b. Patient assessment
c. Dental and Periodontal chartings
d. Instrumentation-including ultrasonics with air polishing
e. Dental hygiene care planning
f. Patient oral hygiene education
g. Dental radiographs
h. Fluoride and fluoride varnish application
i. Professionalism
j. Pain management
k. Sealants
By being able to:
a. Collect appropriate information from the patient, analyze the information and record a complete medical/dental history.
b. Assess the patient’s oral health status and record the findings of the assessment on the appropriate forms.
c. Evaluate the teeth and periodontium and record the findings on the appropriate chartings.
d. Utilize the correct principles of instrumentation necessary for the removal of all deposits.
e. Analyze the patient assessment information and formulate a dental hygiene care plan specific to the patient’s needs.
f. Assess patient's oral hygiene status, and create and oral hygiene education plan specific to the patient’s needs.
g. Employ the correct technique in exposing and processing dental radiographs specific to the patient's needs.
h. Assess the patient’s needs and demonstrate the proper technique for applying topical fluoride and fluoride varnish.
i. Conduct and record a complete dental and periodontal charting.
j. Illustrate professional behavior in all clinical settings as outlined in the State College of Florida Dental Hygiene Clinic manual.
k. Place sealants on teeth that meet the criteria with the approval of the supervising dentist.
l. Assess the need and provide the appropriate pain control therapies.
m. Evaluate the need and place antimicrobial/antibiotic agents.
n. Demonstrate effective response to common medical or dental emergencies.
o. Assess the patient’s care needs to determine the need for ultrasonics and air polishing and treat appropriately.
2. Demonstrate knowledge, technical skills and behavior in:
a. Infection control
b. Student sterilization assignment
c. Special clinic assignments
By being able to:
a. Practice accepted infection control guidelines in all clinical settings.
b. Employ management skills during all clinical assignments in the dental hygiene
sterilization.
c. Apply accepted dental hygiene care practices in all special clinic assignments.
