EDU 0708 Handout #01
Winter Term 2002
MacFarland
Define the Term Research
It should be clarified that research is by no means restricted to statistical analysis (although statistical analysis may indeed be a central feature to many research investigations). Instead, research should be viewed as the orderly investigation, analysis, and interpretation of a problem.
To be even more precise, Isaac and Michael (1981:41) identified nine types of research:
1.Historical
2.Descriptive
3.Developmental
4.Case or Field
5.Correlational
6.CausalComparative
7. True Experimental
8.QuasiExperimental
9.Action
In many ways, the exact type of research design used is a matter of definition we tend to use research methodologies that best "fit" our conceptualization of research. Even so, students should recall that there are many types of research and that each type of research has appropriate uses for the investigation of technicallyoriented issues.
Research Models (Campbell and Stanley, 1963)
1. One group pretest/posttest design
2. Randomized control group pretest/posttest design
3. Randomized posttest only design
4. Randomized Solomon four group design
5. Time series
6. Factorial design
One Group Pretest/Posttest Design:

Randomized Control Group Pretest/Posttest Design:

Randomized Posttest Only Design:

Randomized Solomon Four Group Design:

C2 No No Yes
E2 No Yes Yes
**************************************************************
Time Series:
**************************************************************

A Yes Yes1 Yes2 Yes3 Yes ... n
**************************************************************
Note. Time series research design can incorporate many
variations on control/experimental and dependent/
independent measures. The topic of attention in a
time series research design is the effect of "time."
Factorial Design:

Note. By using a factorial design (especially with Twoway
ANOVA based designs) it is possible to analyze the
effect(s) of interaction. I argue that this feature
is so important that you should seriously consider a
factorial design when proposing a research methodology
since interaction is an important phenomenon and it
should be given more consideration in our research
studies.

Summary Evaluation
1 2 3 4 5 NA UOverall quality of this academic program
As a note of special interest, if you do not regularly use NSU=s library/information resources, please tell us how you prepare(d) for papers/research. What facilities do you use, and how do you gain access to the resources? Possibly because of your employment status, does your employer provide access to better services than the level of services the University offers to students?
Further, it would also be very useful if you offered specific examples of how you gain access to resources and information if you are either: (1) physically distant from the University's campus-based infrastructure, (2) unable to conveniently use campus-based resources even if you reside near the University's four South Florida campuses.
