EXPERIMENT #1

Bob was worried that water heated in a microwave might not be safe to drink, so he decided to test the idea. Bob collected 6 green plants of the same size and age, placed them in a 10cm pot with normal potting soil. He put all the plants in a greenhouse with a grow light for 12 hours. Every day Bob heated up 200mL of tap water in the microwave, waited for it to cool to room temperature and watered plants 4, 5, and 6 with it. At the same time he watered plants 1, 2, and 3 with 200mL of the same tap water at room temperature.

1)What’s the independent variable in this experiment?

2)What’s the dependent variable in this experiment?

3)List 3 things Bob kept constant in the experiment.

4) What was the control?

5) What was the experimental group?

EXPERIMENT #2

Monica wants to find out whether a new type of fertilizer will make her plant grow higher. Monica collected 5 green plans of the same size and age to place in a 5cm pot with normal potting soil. She put all the plants in the same location without shade outside for 6 days. 3 of them had the new fertilizer and the other 3 did not. She watered them the same amount each day and measured their height. She expects the new fertilizer will cause her plants to grow to a greater height within 5 days.

1)What’s the independent variable in this experiment?

2)What’s the dependent variable in this experiment?

3)List 3 things Monica kept constant in the experiment.

4)What was the control for the experiment?

5)What was the experimental group?

Scientific Method

1) Explain how a scientist’s proven hypothesis can become a theory. ______

2)How can this theory possibly change in the future? ______

3)In a controlled experiment, how many variables should be tested at a time? ______

4)A hypothesis must be testable. How do you test a hypothesis?______
